223 versus 22-250

''I would just get a 243 before I'd rebarrel a 22-250 to a faster twist.''
I think your point was missed, it's a shame, because it was a good one.

I like the .22-250 round best of the two, but I saw the ammo supply/price situation we see now coming several years ago. Since I had been shooting and loading the .223 enough years that I could feed one without going to the store, guess what my varmint round is?

I have had both. I kept the .223 because:
It was more accurate generally speaking
Cheaper to feed whether factory or handloads
Less recoil, not a major factor unless you are shooting varmints from a rest, where with the .223 and 40 gr bullets at 3700 fps, you can see where your bullets hit (and the gophers fly). With the .22-250 you lose your sight picture and have to rely on a spotter.
Added bonus, you can share ammo with your AR-15. What, you don't have one yet? Get one to go along with your bolt action varmint rifle in .223. You never know when the gophers or prairie dogs might mass for a charge and you need those 30 round magazines to repel the wave of rodent fury. :D

I have 3 Sako Laminated Varmint SS rifles in 223( 1-10 twist), 22-250, and 243 so I say get one of each!

Regarding scopes, I highly recommend this: http://www.bushnell.com/all-products/rifle-scopes/legend-ultra-hd/4-5-14x-44-mil-dot. Really any in this product line that I've looked through are great.

It is a great scope for the money. I did compare to the Diamondback and felt this one was better. You can get it at Cabela's for $200 right now or less with SWFA's price match. It's a steal at $200. I've really enjoyed learning the mil-dot abilities a scope can give you.

As to the Howa, I got one in 22-250 about 4 years ago, and I've been very pleased. Very accurate, great trigger. Zero complaints.
