.22 short in mouseguns

Aarondhgraham- "They were effective in pocket sized self defense guns,,,
Because no one wanted to be shot with anything."

So, you know people who don't mind being shot today?

Someone always uses this reply,,,
In all seriousness I don't want to get hit with a BB gun.

But in our times there isn't that underlying fear,,,
That any gut penetrating wound is a death sentence.

Nowadays, people have the expectation of surviving a gunshot wound that doesn't kill you immediately.

It's a somewhat spurious expectation but people just don't have the fears they used to have.

Didn’t Colt make a semi-auto that shot .22short? A guy I used to work with was hurting for cash one day and asked me if I’d buy one from him for $50. I didn’t have the cash on me, so he sold it to someone else.

Carguychris- I have never, ever, had an instance of rimlock with a .25 acp.
Ditto, perhaps because the magazines are properly designed. :)

Actually, the .22 long is the better fit for .25 acp guns and some were made for the long. Short guns require a spacer in the magazine.
True dat. ;) My point about cartridge length re: .22LR has to do with the old saying that it's easy to make a board shorter but really hard to make one longer. :) To fit .22LR, the pistol must be enlarged; to fit .22S, you just need a mag spacer and perhaps some massaging of the feed ramp, recoil spring, etc.

I'd attribute the use of .22S rather than .22L to (a) the relative lack of popularity of the latter and/or (b) precedent, inertia, whatever you want to call it - "our old model was .22S, our competitors all sell pistols in .22S, so our new pistol will also be .22S."

I have a magazine for the Beretta Minx I haven't bought yet (;)) and the entire front of the magazine is built as a block of plastic that serves as an integral spacer.

Bill, I don't want to start a battle but I would have to say that 22 lr has a much more versatile ammo selection than 22 short. A quick review of CCI, Remington, Winchester, and Aguila websites would indicate that there are quite a few more offerings and a much wider variety of velocity and bullet weight ranges. Some of the offerings start at 22 short power levels and go up from there. While 22 lr wasn't designed for pistol use one could easily make the argument that from the 1950’s forward it has developed into quite possibly the most popular pistol cartridge.

I’m not trying to say that the cartridge is outdated, but the fact of the matter is that it was the first metallic cartridge and there have been many advancements since then. The 22 short does have a wide variety of velocity ranges, but the case is just too small to for any bullet over 30 grains. The muzzle energy from high velocity 22 lr is twice that of the 22 short HV. 22 short is most efficient in short barrels because the powder isn't there to continue to increase velocity in a longer barrel. That is not necessarily a good thing.

PS - those are some very nice looking pistols. I’m jealous…

I have the NAA 22S that I bought because it was so cute.

For grins, I tried the old TX DPS CHL test with it. I shot about a 140 ish out of 250. As comparion, I shoot 250s with Glocks. With a NAA 1 5/8' 22 mag, I shot 238.

The NAA 22S is not the easiest to shoot. It's a shoot them in the nose hair gun. I sometimes carry it for a tertiary gun, just for grins. If it came down to that - Oy!

My main point is that .22 short does very short barrels better than long rifle. The velocity loss from a 2" barrel firing LR is very dramatic.

True, but much of the added selection consists of hollow points, which are unlikely to reach adequate velocity for reliable expansion when fired from the 2" barrel (+1 Bill's last post); for the same basic reason, hyper-velocity .22LR loads will yield relatively less of an advantage than is typical from rifle-length barrels.

The main advantage of .22LR over .22S in a short barrel is the heavier bullet. Velocity, not so much.

Curse you Bill DeShivs,,,

Curse you Bill DeShivs,,,
Now I have hard core lust for a Minx.

Actually I don't really want to own one,,,
But I would love to fire 50 rounds through one.

I'm a big fan of the Bobcat, having owned three over the years. Down to one, now. And older high polish blue, wood grip model.
I've often thought Beretta should make one with a longer barrel and better sights. If they made it easy to pop out the barrel pin, they could sell them with both long and short barrels.

I used to own a long barrel Minx 22short. It was a lot of fun to shoot.

I have a old Astra 22 short. its a sweet little pistol . I don't want to be shot with one I use CCI shorts. and I think makes a better pocket pistol than those silly little NAA pistols. Yes I have on of those also 22 LR and 22 Mag. I can hit something smaller than a barn at more than 10 ' with the Astra. .
