I have been goign to the range at least twice a week. All that .40, .38 and .223 ammo is getting expensive. I was thinking of getting a cheap 22 rifle to plink with. I am looking for something nice, reliable, easy to clean but not to expensive. Does anyone have any suggestions(I was looking at the 10/22 and a Marlin model 60)
Thanks

Ruger 10/22...it's a classic, every gun collection should include at least one. They're the 1911s of .22 rifles...you can leave it bone-stock, or trick it out as time and money allows. You can get Hogue stocks, folding stocks, bull barrels, and all kinds of doodads. But even in the stock configuration, they're more fun than a shoebox full of crack-smoking bullfrogs. They have some resemblance to M1 Carbines, both in looks and in handling.

22 rifles

I like the Buckmark rifle, standard barrel with sights. It feels good and is very accurate. This month's American Rifleman has a good article on it.

I also recommend the 10/22 and if you want a bolt action get the 77/22 there both great firearms and worth the money.

Just to keep things fair. The Marlin model 60 is an excellent rifle. It doesn't have all the fancy after market add-ons, because it doesn't need them. It works just fine right out of the box.

I got a Marlin 25N for $150. It's a good accurate bolt action rifle, ready to go to mount a scope out of the box.

'nuther honerable mention for the Marlin 60 if you want a semi.
You might want to look at the lever actions like the Winchester, Browning and Marlin too. They're generally not as accurate as the semi-autos, but a ton of fun in their own right. Cleaning a .22 is as much a choice of ammo as anything else. The cheap stuff like Federal and Remington tend to be on the dirty side, while the more expensive CCI's usually leave less mess to clean up.

The Marlin 60 is an excellent rifle, but it isn't perfect. If you must unload it without using the trigger you wind up with your hand in front the muzzle of a loaded gun. I know it is possible to unload it without getting your hand in front of the muzzle, but eveybody slips now and then. (Just ask a certain member's closet:o) The 10/22 uses magazines making it a little easier to avoid this kind of problem.

That being said, if you don't like to tinker with things and just want a rifle that works, then the Marlin 60 is just the gun for you. If you like to tinker and just want to see if you can screw up a working rifle then the 10/22 is just the gun for you.;)

Another vote for the Ruger 10/22. It was my first 22 cal rifle and it is still my favorite. :)

The extra accuracy out of the M60 will be worth it! Just keep it clean and it will be every bit as reliable as the 10/22.

marlin 25n IMHO the god of rimfires. I can constintly hit coffe cans at 200 yards with it. It is far more accurate than most any shooter. any marlin will do but i prefer the bolt guns. (the tube fed wouldn't be bad either)

Comments.......

to RAE: Federal's Gold Medal stuff is pretty clean, and its definitely NOT cheap @ $10/box of 50 rds....Remington/Eley is also making a premium grade....I have no first hand knowledge with it but it is $7/box of 50..........
to bullfrog: you know what I was saying on that "small collection" thread about Knowing your rifle? Well, coffee cans @ 200 sounds good to me, man!

I am going to vote for a good bolt action rifle.Reasons? There is so much out there for ammo like cb shorts that will not cycle a auto. Most of these rds are a lot of fun to shoot and serve some very specific purposes. You loose all that with a auto. The best is to have one of both.If you watch the shops you get some very good inexpensive 22 bolts.I picked up a Russian, that with optics I have I have 50.00 in.It a very ugly, very accurate little rifle. It makes a good beater gun so I don't beat up my better guns.

Ditto on the Marlin Model 60. It is a classic and a tackdriver. In blue steel for about $100 at Wal-Mart, about $150 for the stainless version including a scope.

the CZ 22lr bolt action is a great deal and basically a scaled down mauser action

very cool

i have a M60SS very nice but like alot of semi autos it dislikes the pointy low power Aquila Colobri ammo

so i need a bolt action 22lr
;)

the savage favorite single shot
is very cool too

10/22, or else a Marlin 60.

I have a 10/22, I got Williams firesights for it, as well as a bolt buffer and a new trigger set.

It shoots a dime sized hole, and is quieter than my pellet gun! Oh, and a brick of 500 will cost you $9 at Kmart. So shoot all day long and the piggy bank is still fat.

I've ran about 8000+ rounds I'd venture to say through that rifle.

The other gun I got to mate it is the Ruger 22/45 pistol. It's a 1911, but in a .22LR. Very sweet shooter, accurate as hell, and if you want a lot of range time without blowing $$$, a 10/22 + 22/45 combo is hard to beat.

Also, on a 22/45, you can teach yourself good pistol habits without the expense. Same with the 10/22, learn breathing control, aim, trigger control etc.. all for cheap cheap cheap cheap cheap.

.22LR is a great round, don't let anybody lie to you about it.
