.22 revolver

I'm in the market for a .22 revolver. I was looking at the Ruger SP101 .22 but that is just so darn expensive. What other ones are good? I would prefer double-action.

What are you planning on using it for? For just "general plinking" a Ruger Single 10 is fun and inexpensive.... For a "snubbie" the SP101 is about average price...

Personally, I splurged and bought an old S&W model 17 and will own it for life... and then some!:D

Well as far as modern DA 22revolvers that leaves the taraus`s`s line up.

They got em from snubbies to hunters , there latest Tracker has interchangeable cyls. from 22 lr to 22 mag.

I recently ran up on a Tracker 9 shot 22lr & it`s reliable in SA/DA ,but trigger is a bit heavy & that`s ok because it`s smooth as butter !! Overall fit & finish is Good .

It fires the cheapest stuff I could find at the GS& groups it fairly well (for my shooting anyways) & the good stuff even better.

The sites are as good as they come bright orange front ramp & flat millet style rear .The barrel is 6.5" & full underlug making recoil nonexistant but heavy , muzzle heavy .

Now for the BUT ! when shooting the hyper velocity stuff rite under the heads of the rims they fire form into notches of the poorly fitted extractor & it makes it tuff to eject the rounds (my 11 yr. old can`t eject em) 33 gr. standard is alot better.

Pic coming .

Here`s the pic I promised , laying on the Midway flyer . As ya see kinda big for a 22.

I would buy a used hard put away wet 40 year old single six before I bought a Taurus.

Wait, I did(well maybe it isn't really in very bad condition). Only time I have EVER considered selling it was when I was drooling over a single ten.

Did I mention I sent Ruger CEO an Email lamenting the fact that H&R had a ten shot and Ruger didn't about three years ago? The least these gun companies could do is send me a product sample...

I would prefer a 4in barrel for accuracy
Oh, OK then. Thanks for clarifying. I was under the impression you were looking for a DA snubby.

In that case, your only option for that would be a Taurus 94 if you don't want the SP101.

If you feel the new Ruger SP-101 22LR is expensive, then you are left with Taurus and Charter Arms in new DA 22 revolvers. I recommend neither. But I would like to shoot a Taurus Tracker in 22. If you buy a Taurus, check it out as best you can in the store.

The Ruger LCR-22 with the short barrel runs $400-$425 typically and it has no visible hammer. So it is DA only.

In the used market, I would look for a H&R Model 999 Sportsman in very good condition (most are) and unless it is some of the ones of special interest to collectors, you should be able to pick it up for under $300.

The new Ruger SP-101 forms the lower end of the better DA 22 revolvers and I don't think it compares well to a S&W M17 or M18 or the Colts. But there is a lot of interest in them by those that really don't want to pay for a S&W M617. Afterall, it's JUST a 22. :)

Other than the Ruger, in a new DA revolver I think you're basically down to the Tauruus 94 (941 in .22 Magnum) or the Charter Arms Pathfinder. The Charter Arms run about $100 more than the Taurus.

I have no idea what JohnWilliams is talking about. I can't tell what he likes or dislikes
If I had a nickel for everytime I heard this from one of the voices.

I wouldn't buy a Taurus.
If you have to have double action then get the SP101 or charter if you don't have the money. Look used.

If you are ok with single action, and I don't see where you aren't, get the ruger single series or heritage revolver. I would much rather a Heritage than a Taurus or even a Charter. The heritage has a strong reputation.

Act fast though:

If I were you I would just save my money and wait until I could afford the Ruger. A quality 22 is priceless and with all the shooting you do with it you can easily recoupe your cost VS the price of ammo for center fire guns. Don't forget a little 22 takes just as much mach work and assy time as a regular centerfire gun.

No love for the Heritage SA revolvers? I got one with a 9" barrel and I dig it.
I have one with a 3.75" barrel and I hate it. Waiting for the next local gun buyback so that I can get some money out of it.

Charter Arms Pathfinder,,,

It's not a glamorous gun but it shoots well and doesn't cost a fortune.

It comes in 2", 4", and 5" models,,,
My lady friend has a snubbie and it's a very nice shooter,,,
I have recommended the 4 & 5" versions to friends who own and love them.

And here as well.
