.22 recommendations

I'm looking to pick up a .22 for target practice, protection, etc., etc., etc. Anybody got any suggestions on what to buy?

You can't go wrong with a Ruger MkII or 22/45. However, a .22LR is not a good choice for self-defense.

Have a 22/45. Nothing wrong with the pistol. Solid, accurate, and well priced. Had a Buckmark(no frills model) that I like better. Wish I kept it instead of getting the Ruger. It just performs better for me.

Just ordered my new Buckmark, I'll let you know. I was thinkg 22/45, fondled a few, then wrapped my hand around the Browning. Ooooo, ordered one as soon as I got home. Exactly $20.00 more than the Ruger. It'll be at my door for $222.65.

I've had numerous Buckmarks over the years and think they are an excellent design for practice and teaching others to shoot. I know the Rugers are more popular but I think the Buckmark feels better, is plenty accurate and is a beautiful piece. Good Shooting, JLee

If you want something for target practice and PROTECTION you might want to consider something in a larger caliber than .22. This is if you were referring to protection from other humans and not protection from a swarm of rats.

As Jeff and Cawdor said consider something larger (.38/.357) for personal defense. For fun the Buckmark and/or Ruger Mark I are good solid fun guns but don't discount the revolvers either. The Smith model 17 is a good gun as well as numerious inexspensive single actions. A good old .22 will prove to be the most used and enjoyed gun in any collection.

We live in a time in which attitudes and deeds once respected as courageous and honorable are now scorned as being antiquated and subversive.

If bucks are an issue I'd second the recommendation for a Ruger.

If bucks are less of a consideration I'd recommend a more serious caliber for protection and in a gun for which a .22 conversion unit is available.

Here's another option, but it's only worth is target shooting. I just bought a Baikal IZH-35M and LOVE it. It's a little rough around the edges, but at $400 it gets you into a European style target .22. It's the same gun the E. European shooters used to pummel the American squads with. For target pistols....it's hard to beat this fella.

GKT, I posted a lengthy message about the IZH-35M a few weeks ago. You should be able to find it with a search. The short story is that I agree with you, it's a great target pistol at a great price.

I use MkII and it is very nice, inexpensive and accurate. Two things about this gun: Taking it down is a horrible grueling experience, the clip follower is hard and hurts your thumb when loading, but one of those finger things, that you put over the follower would fix that. I have used the Browning Buck Mark, that is a wonderful little pistol. It is accurate and fun, but more expensive then the MkII.

I`ve had a Ruger MK-512 and a Buckmark standard bull barrel before. I actually shot the Ruger slightly better but the Browning felt and handled better for me. I just picked up another Buckmark today. I opted for a Micro Plus in two tone satin nickle/satin black. If it shoots anywhere near half as good as it looks I`m gonna be in for a treat. :) Marcus

A possibility could be the Ruger Single Action Revolver. You can use the .22lr cylinder for recreational shooting, and the 22mag cylinder when concerned about self defense. The blued models are modestly priced, and these are quality revolvers.

Ruger Mark II. Inexpensive & tough. My bone of contention against the Buckmark is that when you want to strip it to clean, you remove the rear sight base (and with it, the rear sight).

For revolvers, the Ruger SP101 or the S&W 3" 317 (if I got that model # right, the eight shot, adjustable sight airweight 22 with a 3" bbl).

You can get a good deal on a Ruger .22 at WallyWorld, especially the .22/45

Spartacus has a Buckmark that I found I shoot well- minute of squirrel. Considering the relatively small amount I shoot, that means something.

I love my Ruger. It's a stainless steel, slabside 6 7/8" barrel that my wife bought me for Christmas. Come to think of it, I love my wife too! :D

Got to try out my new Buckmark yesterday. Wow, what a great little gun! I like the Micro (4")better than the 5.5" standard I used to have. I actually seem to shoot this one better. Very smooth action ,real nice trigger pull. After taking a few boxed of Blazer .22s to get used to it I was able to shoot cloths pins off the rope I hang my targets from with alarming regularity from 15yds. offhand. I got almost all of em with the first shot. Groups hovered around 1" at 20yds. I don`t generally shoot that well,it must be the gun! :D I can`t wait to try if from sandbags with some CCI Greentag and Eley Tenex. Marcus

My no-frills 6" Buckmark is just about my favorite pistol. It's a cheater pistol, and is my best bet for training people how to shoot pistols. I love that the controls are in the right place for those of us who also shoot 1911s. I don't like that you have to remove the rear-sight base to clean it, but I've noticed that: (a)It shoots great dirty, and (b)It's not hard to do, and returns to its zero. Just keep a screwdriver in your cleaning kit. (or an allen head, for the new ones)

I've got a handmade 1912 flap hoster for mine that my dad made, and it's spent many, many a day in the field with me.

Hey Everyone, Just had to chime in and say,
I like my Ruger MK-II KMK-512 very much.
Shoot's well, is very accurate, economical;
but a bitch to "break down" and clean. :)
