22 - New Ruger Amer or used Rem 581/other used?

My 581 is the most accurate .22 I own, unmodified (except for a scope) will do quarter sized groups at 50 yards with bulk ammo. I have a friend who is a new shooter and when we go he always wants to shoot the 581 because even he can consistently hit bullseyes with it.

And I bought it new in 1980 when I was 13, so it hasn't been out of production for 50 years!

Apparently, for some reason, Ruger has chosen not to offer their RAR in a Walnut stock. Is it unworthy of good Walnut?

If you can't go to CZ, the answer (new) is Marlin, then Savage, in that order.

Or used, there are many many options of wood and still.

That is a 77/22, not the American Rifle. It's a nice rifle but well above the OP's price point.

Any name brand 22 rifle will work well. Matter of personal preference. Which looks and feels best to you?

My first gun was a 581 purchased new in 1967. Stolen in 1986 I bought a replacement from the estate of a gun smith who had done some extensive modifications to it. Drilled for an addition action screw, bedded, cut the barrel to 20", trigger job, etc.
