.22 handguns

What would you prefer for rabbits, rattlesnakes, and tin cans.... .22 semiauto? .22LR/WMR convertible? Single caliber DA revolver?

A Ruger MKII of a late 50's vintage. (I think it is that old.) It is acurate as all get out, and has served three generations of men quite well.

Any or all,,,

It just ones personal preference,,,
Any of the guns will do the job equally as well.

Personally I prefer a DA/SA revolver,,,
The last time I went on a bunny-walk I carried a 6" Colt Trooper Mk-III.

The time before that I believe I was carrying a 5.5" Ruger Mk-III

What do you like the best?,,,
That's the gun for you.

If I were hiking or hunting (covering a lot of ground), I would prefer a double action 22 revolver like the S&W M63 or M617.

If I wasn't covering a lot of ground, I would prefer to use my Ruger Mark II with 5.5" bull barrel for speed, accuracy, and reliability. For more casual uses, I would probably take the Ruger SR-22.

I would carry and use what you are most confident with whether that be a single action revolver, double action revolver or semi-auto pistol.

Good choice but sorry the Mk II isn't that old. That would be the MK I still a good choice.

I prefer a semi-auto because that's what I've used for many years. I now have a double action revolver that would do the trick as well. But I tend to stick to what works.

One of my relatives has a Ruger single six that he uses as a fun camp gun. It is very good at rodent control.

For handgun hunting I prefer a .22lr revolver. They're reliable, accurate and don't leave brass laying all over the hunting field.

For walking the woods with a semi auto (I usually use a MKII or a 422/622 S&W) I put a shotshell in the chamber and a full mag of regular .22s. When the snakes are out, it's a draw-and-shoot deal. If something else needs shooting I can just draw and rack the round out of the chamber and find it later. The same kind of thing works for a revolver, just spin the cylinder ahead to a ball round if needed, and keep a shotshell ready to go. A Tuff Strip makes for an easy way to carry spare ammo thats quiet and easy to get to.

How effective is .22 shotshells on snakes anyway? I've never tried it on a snake, but have patterned in on cardboard. It seems to me that for it to be effective at all, I'd have to be much closer to the snake than I'd like to be.

Getting to the original question, I mostly use a Browning Buckmark with a 4" Tactical Solutions barrel and Williams FireSights. The same gun originally had a 5.5" barrel and I had a red dot tube on it. That set-up may have been better for rabbits, but I find the gun much more fun to shoot now. If I want a heavier .22 with more precise aiming, I'll grab a rifle. :)

Prefer a double/single action revolver. For a casual walk in the woods, the S&W Kit Gun is my usual choice. If I'm out specficly for game, I might carry a K frame like the Model 18.

We really don't shoot snakes here (New York state). Very few poisonous ones left..... and the DEC places all snakes on the protected list.

Ruger x 2

If I plan to shoot a lot, as in plink, a Ruger Mk II standard model, 4". For years it was my only .22 handgun, and it carries well in a GI rig w/ .45 flap holster, web belt, canteen, and a FA pouch for extra ammo.

I have other .22's now, and my current GP favorite is a Single 6 with 6" bbl and the .22 mag cylinder. It is decidedly more punch for game, and I shoot the longer barrel better. The WMR ammo is to expensive to plink, but a few shots now and then won't break the bank. Volume single action plinking is sort of a bore, loading and unloading reduces shooting time and volume. It is a good way to slow down a trigger happy teenager.

If I just want a .22 along, and don't plan to plink or pot, a little Bearcat is no bruden to tote.

For some reason, I never came up w/ a DA .22 revolver.

Oh yeah

I never warmed up to the Ruger heavy barrels as field guns. I owned a 5or 6" model for a few years and shot it better than anything I ever owned. I could ring the 6" gong on the hillside off my back porch with ease. But for the weight, if I was going to carry that heavy a firearm afield, I wanted more gun, say .38 or .357 mid range.

Eventually I decided I didn't need a gong pistol and traded the Ruger heavy away. But that thing would shoot.

I have both ruger MKII & ruger single six with 9.5 barrel,Its my favorite bunny getter. The single six lets you change to 22mag if needed.:D

I like the Single Six both lr & mag.

Yes, snake shot will kill rattlers very well. You do need to be within 12' with the .22's tho. I killed 44 here, right around the home place, the first year that I lived here, all with .22 snake shot. I only ever had to shoot one twice.

I'm liking the old Ruger lovefest.

This '68 Standard sees action regularly. My 13 year old and I warm up with this and have burned 1500 through it since Christmas.
