.22 CB longs

Ok friends, I actually had some time free today because the (in)famous US Government did not FedEx me any more work, so seeing that I was free and still getting paid by "fearless leader", what could be better poetic justice than for a private citizen to do some firearms research and firing on "fearless leaders" time :D?
Ok, old age must have caught up with me when I said that I was getting 950FPS with the CB Shorts in my M69 Winchester. I just ran 10 thorugh the chrony and it was 850FPS NOT 905FPS. The high was 873 low was 836 about a 1 inch group at 35 yards (peep sights). My Rem 550-1 shoved em out the businesss end at about a 780 average. No doubt the action was beginning to cycle before the bullet was clear of the barrel hence the slight velocity loss. I fired 3 rounds of .22 Short in the Win 69 for a chrony check and they averaged 1130 which is about right. I did not fire any in the Rem 550-1. The group with the Rem 550-1 was about 2 inches at 35 yards which I would like to attribute to the action starting to cycle before the bullet left the barrel, but in all honesty is more likely a combination of old eyes, an old eyeglass prescription, and a vee and post sight compared to a reciever sight :D. The CB Shorts were CCI, the .22 Shorts were Remington, and the shooting was done offhand (no I did not hit my chrony :D).

Carlyle - thanks much. I am very surprised by the info. Obviously I stand corrected.

No I'm really interested in the CB Longs. I keep a couple of boxes around for squirrels and fire lapping.

John, the .22 CB Shorts are the same as the .22 CB longs except they are in a short case and the CB Longs are in a long rifle case(I guess). They both have either no powder charge and are propelled by the primer or a very minimal powder charge. Of course a .22 Short is a regular .22 Short. It has been years since I have seen regular .22 Longs for sale. I did not know that they were still manufactured. The old .22 Long was a .22 Short bullet and powder charge in a Long Rifle case. I had no idea that .22 CB Longs were even made. The ones you have may I ask you who manufactured them? I know that there are .22 Shorts and .22 Long Rifles along with .22 CB Shorts and .22 Ratshot on the market but do not know if regular .22 long are being offered for sale anymore. There also used to be a .22 BB Cap. That was a 22 caliber round ball in a very short case, the case was shorter than even a .22 Short case. The used to come in green tins of either 25 or 50, kind of looked like the tins that black powder percussion caps come in. They had no powder just a hot primer to propel them. They were good on birds but that was about the extent of it. They were not accurate enough or powerful enough for squirrel or rabbit.

Gizmo99, I think we were both posting at the same time :D. What brand were the CB Longs CCI? I did not know they even made them.

Carlyle, I just checked the Guns and Ammo Annual and the velocity is about where your chrono indicates. Both are rated at about 750 - 850 fps. I am shocked, I really thought they would be sub 500 fps.

CCI makes both the ".22 CB" (short case) and the ".22 CB Long". I have a box of each in front of me. For some reason, the Long is much quieter than the standard CB.

I usually get mine through Georgia Arms. Have never found them at a discount place and they are not inexpensive.

BTW, tried some of that "Aguilla" stuff and it was both inaccurate and too weak. The CB Longs will take a squirrel right off the feeder....

Giz, I am going to have to look for some of the CB Longs. I do find it hard to imagine that they would be quieter than a CB Short. WOW! Thats quiet! Yesterday when I was running them through the Chrony I passed a few BB's from my Crossman Pump, dog chaser, errrrrrrr BB Rifle :D through the chrony too and there was hardly any difference between the 2 in sound. (ave of 440 FPS for bb's) In fact I put the chrony tripod right under my carport and used a concrete pillar in the back yard as my back stop :D. I can imagine that they are not cheap, the CB Shorts are $4.95 per hundred at my local hardware store. I live about 2 miles out of town on 5 acres that is covered with pecans and like my ex-neighbor have to keep the squirells thined out. I have neighbors but not all that close but rather than rattle their windows with my Rem 1100 12 guage :D I just pop em with the CB Short. Introduces then to a mag-n-lite pot with onions in it right quick like.

.22 Short - 29 grain bullet, short case, 'normal' .22 velocity of 1050fps.
.22 Long Rifle - 40 grain bullet, long case, standard velocity ~1050fps.

High Velocity .22s run about 1250fps.
Hyper Velocity .22s generally use a lighter bullet weight, and are pushed to 1300+ fps.

CBs, in both short and long versions, shoot a 29 grain bullet at a lower velocity, generally 700-750fps. They are very quiet out of a rifle, although they may not cycle the actions of semi-automatics.

Southla1, I also have a Rem 550. Love that old thing! Mine was my Dad's from when he was a kid back in the late '30s-early '40s. I like the 550 over my Marlin 60 and Ruger 10/22 because it feeds all sizes of ammo - S,L or LR. I call it the Caddy of .22 autoloaders. It is just so smooth! By comparison, the Ruger is nice, but not in the same league and the Marlin is just a cheapie.

I have used the 550 and CBs to take out a skunk that was digging a burrow under my patio, just four feet from the back sliding door of the house.

One evening the cat was going nuts looking out the patio door and I went to see what what was going on. Saw the skunk digging the hole and very, very slowly closed the sliding door. I told the wife, who was sitting right next to the door watching TV, that I had to go upstairs for a minute. I got out the 550, loaded one CB into it (I can't remember if it was Short or Long). I opened the upstairs window immediately above the patio, leand out the window, and pffft, put that one round right through the top of the skunk's head. It didn't even have time to think about stink! My wife never heard me take the shot. I just went outside through the front door, picked up the dead skunk, and threw it in the garbage.

.22CBs out of a rifle are quieter than my Sheridan .20 cal air rifle! Out of a short barrel they are a bit louder, but still very quiet compared to full power(?) .22 loads.

I have also dispatched a good size racoon with CBs out of my 6" .22 revolver!

I haven't seen any BB caps around in a while. They had a .22 cal round ball crimped into a .22 Short case at a extremely low velocity of ~450fps.

I have used the CCI Mini Cap a lot years ago.I have hunted small game in the city limits before, and it worked fine.I always used a Marlin 39A with a long barrel.the loudest sound was the hammer droping, unless there was an eco from the side of a building of something.I saw a friend kill a deer with one.The range was about 25 yards.Head shot, droped like a rock.I am not condoning it, I am just saying I saw it done. When I lived in town for awhile I started having a lot of trouble with stray dogs getting in my trash.WE would carry our trash to the curb in the morning before work and the stray dogs would tear it all up before the garbage truck would get there.Nothing pisses me off more than picking up trash.I taped a flashlight onto that model 39 and started dog hunting of a nignt. If I saw one in my trash I gut shot it.It would run off so I didn't have to dispose of the body.I know this sounds cruel and imoral but I had had gutfull at the time.It was also unlawful to have dogs running loose in that area anyway.

Conical Ball. The earliest ones had bullets shaped like conical balls, or spherical cones, take your pick. It's a cone with a round nose. Or a ball with a conical skirt. Anyone else know more?

The CB stands for conical bullet, and bb caps are just a round lead ball.

Hey Cougar got my 550-1 from my father for Christmas back in about 67 or 78. Hell I was 23 or 24 then but he said "Well you bought your first .22 (Win 69) and wore that one out so I figured I should give you one .22 in your life anyway". Actually I HAD worn the Win 69 out in one sense. The Win 69 headspace is from the back of the bolt where it mates up in the reciever. Over thousands and thousands of rounds, the metal on the back of the bolt actually wore down enough to where the bolt did not lock up tightly enough to give reliable ingition. I fixed it by arc welding a bead on the back of the bolt and polishing it back down to the right dimensions. Many years ago while I was in the service I made some kind of trade or the other and ended up with a Lyman Micrometer Peep Sight. It was intended for a Win Mod. 54 but the base fit (with a lil jury rigging such as drilling and tapping, and raising the front sight height)the Win 69. It was just what the doc ordered for tired old eyes. My Rem. 550-1 WILL cycle .22 CB Shorts at well above 95% reliability. My High Standard Torunament Model Auto loading handgun will not, plus the noise level in that 5" barrel is LOUD!

Aw thanks man! Moi a writer? :D I guess not I have a hard enough time just spelling correctly. Usually ahve to ge back and edit 3 or 4 times to correct the spelling. I did learn something Saturday though. those tree rats serve a purpose! I keep em well thinned here :D, and had tons of pecans under one tree. The boss (wife) had us all out there picking Saturday and man my back is still killing me! I may have to let the squirrels multiply so i don't ahve that much picking to do. My old back was aching the whole time that LSU was whupping up on Alabama in Tiger Stadium :D :D :D
