22-250 or 25-06 for varmits?

I have never owned a 22-250,just never had a need for one.My 223's have always fit my .224 caliber varmint needs, and I'm able to shoot heavier bullets than 55-60 gr out of both of them when needed.
I do own a 25/06,and have taken it p'dog hunting before. It's a heavy barreled rifle so recoil is never an issue, but the barrel will heat up quick if you are shooting multiple shots back to back.
But it is fun shooting p'dogs with it at long ranges, and watching them get flipped 10' in the air when the bigger bullet hits them.

I can go up to 100-105grs with no problem.

At what distance? I SERIOUSLY doubt my rifle would stabilize those.

Distance? Beats me, never shot them- however there is a steady supply of loaded ammo and component bullets for sale at those weights.. Somebody must be doing it. One of these days, I do intend to see how heavy of a match bullet I can work up to.

The .25-06 is really not a varmit round in my book. Sure, you can shoot groundhogs with a .458, but the .22-250 would be a sooner choice for me.

Sorry homesick that statement was ment for old roper....I agree with your opinion of the vtr, to loud and over hyped....I had a skinny barrel savage 22-250 that would shoot the same size groups as the vtr

The best of both worlds is the .220 swift. IMO the 25-06 is too big and requires more $ for ammo. I would stick with a .22 caliber and the 22-250 is a good one. If you want to eek out the .224 to max performance the .220 swift is awesome.

Both are great calibers. However, if you reload, I would go with a 257 Roberts. Holds the wind better than the 22-250 and doen't beat you up like the 25-06. Great on pararie dogs and coyotes.

I'd be shooting the 22-250 if my targets were small furry creatures and I was shooting in volume. For longer range predator hunting such as coyote, or hogs the 25-06 works. I use one of my .223s for p-dogs, nutria, or other small varmint. For medium range predator hunting I think the 6.8 SPC is the way to go. It is soft shooting, handles the wind better than the .223 and will take hogs, or deer as well as coyote, fox and bobcat at a longer range. JMHO.

I guess I don't view wild hogs as game animals.

If I'd shoot at an attacking person with a cartridge it is fine for menacing/destructive animals in my book(assuming there is not a huge difference in size such as elk.

Most of the people have decided they would shoot at a 350 pound person, under certain circumstances, with a 223, so I see no reason why the cartridge is not ok to use on a hog that is less than 350 pounds.
By that logic a 22-250 would be fine for all but the largest hogs found in North America.
I don't know of any species of coyote that comes anywhere close to even a small full size person.

The recoil from a 25-06 isn't nearly as bad as some are making it out to be. If you do get a 25-06 make sure you get it with atleast a 24" barrel.

I agree regards 25-06 recoil, as I find it to be pretty mild.

My 25-06 is my general hunting rifle for coyotes/deer; 22-250 for prairie dogs, fun at the range and cheaper to shoot (I shoot factory ammo).

My 22-250 shoots 45 grn WWB mpre accurate than me (shot 3/4" group last weekend-it's a Savage Model 16 with heavy fluted barrel). Can buy 40 rounds of this ammo at Cabelas for $32.....

Logan you said you were going to look for an encore barrel with out getting to complex:) I had a Pro Hunter with a 223 heavy bbl, 22-250 Prohunter bbl and a 25-06 pro hunter barrel. The heavy barrel was by far the most accurate
thats just my experience:)
