2" 357mag

Great responses. My range goes out to 25
yards max. Obviously this is not a SD
Post. More of a recreational question!

Doc, at my age I don't do much relaxed shooting, I do though find shooting can be relaxing at times. The only reason I carry or shoot a 2-3" barrel .357 Magnum is for personal defense. So I limit my range time to, normal, Self-defense ranges generally no more than 30 Feet. At those distances, shooting 6 rounds in 6-8 seconds I keep all my rounds in a 2" circle C.O.M. I don't see any need for much more than that.

As for those who can shoot out to 50+ yards, a tip of my hat to you. Do though remember that a D/A and jury may have a hard time believing that an armed citizen could consider their life in danger at those ranges.

depending on threat level and risk assessment of any tangos presenting a clear and present danger.

Model12, what is a tangos? The only tango I can think of is the dance.

I have to learn to be more detailed in my posts. My original post was how far can you shoot a 2" 357.
But what I should have said was shooting full 357 loads out of a 2" mag is not fun. Damn thing hurts like the dickens and at my age my hands can't take the abuse. Should have qualified it by saying I was using 38 specials +P ammo.
My friend made some incredible 357 hand loads that feels like 38's but acts like 357's and those are terrific. Hope this makes sense.

:D...It certainly does begin to hurt. I am a fan of .38 special loads but I have to admit that a cylinder full of .357's still puts a huge smile on my face.....don't know why, it just does and then I have to rub my hand a bit...:D

Pretty much all of the above posts are true. With careful aiming, slow fire, non-magnum rounds, and a capable shooter, a 2" J-frame should be able to hit a 5" - 10" target at 100 yds. In a break during a Navy shoot many years ago (when my vision was still 20/20) I won a case of beer by hitting a Coke can at 100 yds with a Colt 1911 45. But that is not what the Colt 45 ACP, nor the 2" J-frame revolver were intended to do. They were designed to be 10 - 25 yd weapons. Longer range hits simply show potential "mechanical" accuracy, not practical utility.

For plinking ( S&W model 66 )...in 2 1/2" I'm only competent out to about 25 yds on an 8" target ( 158 gr .357 Mag loads ) - with a decent group.

For self Defense - draw and fire 6 rounds inside of 6 seconds or so --- I'm center chest accurate 8 1/2" X 11" rectangle ( to about 90% ) .. on a silhouette target with that gun out to 8 yds / and mostly I will practice with it between 3 yds and 8 yds.
