1st carry handgun - CZ P-01

Good choice.

The first time or two I carried my CZ 83 it was unloaded, so I see nothing wrong with carrying Condition 3 until you feel comfortable. I wanted to carry in Condition 1 and wanted to make sure that the safety wasn't prone to being inadvertently deactivated while being carried. It stayed in the safe position (and always has since), but what reassured me most was taking the time to examine the various safety mechanisms. For example:

- I believe your decocker drops the hammer to the half-cock position; thus, precluding the firing pin from being struck.

- Check out the firing pin block mechanism on your P-01. You'll see that it prevents the firing pin from being freed to strike the primer only when the trigger is fully depressed.

- If your holsters are good, they will fully cover the trigger guard and be made of material that cannot be depressed to cause an inadvertent trigger pull.

- Your DA trigger pull is long and heavy enough to hopefully prevent a stray windbreaker string from completing a pull while holstering.

All told, when you add safe gun handling practices to these safety features an accidental discharge is highly unlikely to the point of requiring negligence to occur.

2 month update

I thought I'd post an update. I have been carrying for almost 2 months, now. The Aliengear holsters have performed very well. I have only got in one range day with the CZ P01, though, which makes me a sad panda. However, that one day was great. My wife and three boys, as well as my sister-in-law, also took turns shooting. We burned through 200 rounds pretty quickly. After about three weeks of carry in condition 3, I have moved to condition 2.

Off the wall question - can anyone recommend a waterproof chest rig (not shoulder holster) carry option for outdoors activities, like canyoneering?

Thanks for the update. On waterproof chest-rig hostlers, this guy does kydex + nylon straps for hunters/outdoorsman (and many, many other types of holsters including exotics). I'm not sure he has a CZ P-01 blue gun to make the kydex holster for you, though, but he does good work.

Wow, I had no idea that he had a website: http://www.wisconsinholstercompany.com/

He doesn't have his chest rig listed as a product, but basically it is a kydex holster on the chest, with 1" nylon straps. You'd have to call him about that, probably. They have one on display in his store, so that's how I know about it. That and I am getting stingray shoulder holster made by him.

I'm totally considering getting one for backpacking.

Another option to check out (and you will experiment; that's part of the fun :) ), consider a paddle holster if you need to remove the pistol often:

For a waterproof carry system, on your chest or elsewhere, you probably need to find an enclosed chest pack, something like a fanny pack, made of water resistant material with a storm flap over the zipper(s). Or, use a conventional holster and a Gore-Tex parka or jacket to cover it.

Simple Rugged Holsters offers a Chesty Puller conversion kit that allows chest carry: http://www.simplyrugged.com/ecommerce/Chesty-Puller-Conversion-System.cfm?item_id=160&parent=672. Buy one of their pancake holsters and the Chesty Puller harness and you're in business (but not waterproof).

Your P-01 will stand up to a day's exposure to ambient water. Just don't put it away wet. The same goes if it gets exposed to your sweat.

I didn't find what I am looking for, so I left the pistol in the car on the wet hikes and canyoneering. In the end, I may have to just make what I want.

>I plan on carrying in condition 3 for a while before moving to condition 2.<

You've got a top notch DA/SA gun - I own one, so I know.

1) Get totally familiar and comfortable w/ the gun by carrying it unloaded around the house and practicing drawing it, dry firing it (with a 2 inch rubber band length craddled between the hammer and receiver), and decocking it.
Just mess with it unloaded until you're entirely familiar and comfortable w/ the weapon.

2) When 1) above is done, carry the gun decocked w/ a round in the chamber and 13 in the mag (light 1 rd. for spring preservation). The DA is your "safety", and the p01 is designed to make thumbing the hammer into SA very easy.

Racking a gun in a situation dangerous enough to warrant pulling it out in the first place, is a bad game plan.

If you want a rig for hiking and don't want IWB I'd recommend drop leg over a chest rig just cause I never liked drawing while potentially muzzling others and I don't care for the looks. If you did want a shoulder holster (though you can run into the same issue with muzzling) I would think Galco might have what you need.
