1911 Suggestions

If you do look at a Sig as recommended above, know that some (like the XO) are not traditional 1911s - the top of the slide is more square than a true 1911.

That's not a bad thing - just different from all other 1911 slides. It may come into play if you ever want to carry it and can't use a standard 1911 holster.

Having said that, I have a reverse two-tone Sig with a traditional slide that is a fantastic shooter and a beautiful pistol.

Spend a little more than you initial budget and get a basic Sig. :D
One of the best values around now for a gun that you wouldn't mind keeping forever.

I will say I owned a Sig Nitron Rail for a short time. It was a great pistol and part of me wishes I had kept it, but it was part of a "purge" I did before moving across the country. I actually kind of liked the non-traditional squared off slide on the Sig as well.

The only thing was the trigger pull was pretty heavy from the factory. I adjusted it and got it around 3.5# and it was a nice shooter.

Just took delivery of a new stainless Springfield 1911 Loaded. Initial cleaning tomorrow then off to the range. $850 otd and it has ambi safety. I'm a lefty.

I've been accused of being a fan-boy for Ruger's 1911s and I am...they're that good in the two I own. I've got 50+ years of experience with 1911's in war and peace and Ruger builds some good ones, arguably the best for the money.

I have both the full size 5" model as well as the CMD (Commander size). Both are first rate, compare equally with my Colts over the years, and have a lot more modern features: Novak sights, flared mag well, 2 mags furnished, target adj. trigger, checkered flat mainspring housing, SS construction, ported slide, humped grip safety, and target grade accuracy. They don't look like mall-ninja Frankensteins either. Triggers out of the box went 5 lbs in the examples I own.

These are great user guns, a bit heavy for CC use (the alloy CMD would be a better choice IMHO). You can't go wrong with either and can find them new for under $700 if you're patient. Rod

Its nice to always see recommendations for the Ruger SR1911 whenever someone asks for a budget 1911. I think I made the right choice when I bought mine. Its a great pistol. I bought mine used, and have no idea the round count, but I have put literally thousands of rounds through mine now, and its excellent.

Building a 1911 gave me a lot of time in the research phase to think about what I truly desire in a pistol. I like beavertails with commander hammers, short triggers (different than "light") and slim grips. The Springers are awesome platforms, especially if you intend to overhaul it down the road. If you don't like the trigger, replace it with an entire Ed Brown ignition kit and call it a day. If you want to upgrade sights later, make sure it has dovetails!! I own a Sig 1911 and really love it; just keep in mind they are Series 80 (not my preference) and have an external extractor. Like many have said, the vast majority of them have Sig proprietary cuts unless you purchase off their Traditional line. I have a sweet Crossbreed to go with my Sig so life is good.

I gotta say I like the idea of getting an actual Colt firearm like the swries 70 but how much an I paying for the name only? To my untrained eye the Mil-Spec and Series 70 look pretty similar.

Those Rugers are nice to...

What's that saying?

"No bad decision has ever been as costly as indecision"

Or something along those lines

The Springfield is a solid gun but the Colt is finished nicer, IMO. The trigger is nicer and the slide is smoother. At least that has been my experience with my one SA Mil-Spec and multiple Colts. The Colt has less MIM parts if that is a concern but, for a range gun, that doesn't bother me. Is the Colt worth the difference? That's up to you. If you can look at the Colt, that may help you make up your mind.
