i use chip mccormicks. they work 100% of the time, carry an extra round and are (when i bought mine) less expensive than other high end mags. i will continue to buy them as needed because of my positive experience with them. i'm sure there are some other brands that are very popular because they work well too.
I have a few USGI mags that work well. Often I see steel 1911 mags on a shelf at gun shops. I haven't had any problems with these mags as far as feeding 'n such.
What I do want and demand, is a mag that will fall from the gun under its own weight when the mag release is pushed.
What I do, is ask the clerk (and they've never turned me down) to try the mags in my 1911s to see that they fall from the gun while empty. Most do, and those are the ones I buy. As far as feeding, all steel mags seem to work with my 230 grn RN cast bullets. I think the average price I pay is about $9 a piece, sometimes cheaper.

It's been 10 years or so since I've bought any magazines, so I don't know if McCormick's are the same now as then.
Assuming their QC remained high, they had some of the tightest specs for magazine tubes.
I didn't have uniform luck with their V-shaped followers, however, so I replaced them with round-top Pachmyer followers. This converted the 8-rd magazines to standard 7-rd capacity.
Over time, I replaced the springs with Wolff springs.
I like 1/4" rubber pads, so all of my magazines have the thin Pachmyer pads.
As previously stated, I like them to drop free when I hit the magazine release.

Another for Chip McCormick. There are lots of other more expensive mags that you can buy, but none that are more reliable in my experience.
I have not had trouble with any magazine except Pachmayr. The absolute best I have used are Mag Paks (SP?), but they are not available anymore as far as I know.
Otherwise I have found the
SA, Wilson, Colt, McCormick, GI, and a couple of others all are reliable. I have not found one better than the others, and have had a couple of Wilson base pads break and dump my ammo.
I have not tried Tripp, but have used their repair kits, and they work well. I have not found that a particular brand maq is a miracle if a gun is malfunctioning.

My 47D's run good after they sent me xtra power springs for them.
My original Colt Mag that came with my MK IV Series 80 still runs flawless.
My one Mag-Pack bought in the 80's runs flawless.
My one Wilson-Rogers runs flawless.

Good USGI. I like Wilsons, own a bunch, had failures that were mag related with Wilson and Chip both. If I need more mags I'll probably buy some Tripp. Until then I need to convert my 47D to 7 rd with a big spring and steel follower. Next to last round feed jam sometimes with the plastic 8 rd follower.

I still have 50 G.I mags in the wrapper from when my unit transitioned to the M-9
