1911 drops to Half cock

I've done a few trigger jobs on 1911 style guns in my day, some as light as 1.5 pounds with no hammer follow.

There's several things that can cause hammer follow, here's a few of the most common I've seen.

Incorrect/uneven mating surfaces of the sear and hammer hooks.
Disconnector not prepped.
Improper tuning of the sear spring.
The slot in the pistol receiver that holds the tab of the sear spring is to large.
Trigger bounce and lack of free travel of the trigger stirrup.
Sear/Hammer pin holes in receiver not true.

Best Regards

I just noticed this...

It is my next least expensive, next to my 70's Gold Cup that Fires twice, when you pull the trigger. That's a question for another day. LOL!! Thanks Guys for your help

I suggest you drop everything else, and get that Gold Cup fixed ASAP!!!

Your statement implies the Gold Cup fires twice when you pull the trigger, and has done so for some time. It is NOT a joking matter. You have admitted in a public forum, for the whole world to see, that you have a machine gun.

Firing more than one round when you pull the trigger is the definition of a machine gun under the law. Having a machine gun, without the proper, PRIOR Federal approval is a serious crime. Like 10years in prision, big fine and lifetime loss of firearms rights (felony conviction) serious.

The Federal Govt does understand malfunctions, and breakage, and normally does not prosecute, IF YOU GET YOUR GUN FIXED ASAP!!!

On the other hand, if you DON'T get it fixed, or make any attempt to do so, they look on that as strong evidence you are willfully and intentionally violating Federal Firearms LAW, and that, the DO prosecute, gladly.

Take it or send it to a smith, or fix it yourself, but get it FIXED, NOW!
Or not, its your gun and your life at risk. Having to explain your side of things in court is expensive, even if the court rules in your favor, which, is unlikely, if it goes that far.

Good Luck!

just a thought,,,if you replace any of the ignition parts,,,dont be surprised if you need a new thumb safety to go along with the rest of the stuff,,,,changing hammer sear relationship could change how the thumb safety works,,,make sure you check that for proper function too

Yes and also no. Notwithstanding the fitted sear hammer hook engagement surfaces fitting, also match and fit the new sear overall outer dimensions to the old sear outer dimensions (if necessary) and no other parts. A good replacement sear might have slightly oversized outer dimensions so just fitting sear overall is good to go.
