18in. barrel for 870

spoke to remington parts dep't. this a.m. they tell me there are several barrels that will fit. a still amazed the shops i went to didn't know this. i live in no. ca. santa cruz to be exact. anyone have a reccomendation for a shop or gunsmith within 100 miles that can sell me a barrel and service the gun? thanks again to all on this forum who helped.

dear mike.

I have an 870 that my dad's parents bought him for his 18th birthday. the problem is most likely that you have to pull the pump back about 1/4 to 1/2 an inch to get the barrel to seat properly.

You can try:

or

Just drive over the hill to Santa Clara County. I've shopped a little at that Watsonville shop I'm sure you're talking about. They're OK, just a bit higher priced. I've never asked them for any advice, though.

But you can also order a barrel directly from someplace like Midway. This might be a Mossberg-brand barrel made to fit a Remington 870.

i scored a 870 super mag (3.5 in) for $150
than found a bbl for $55 at gunsnet (3 in)
worked fine.
check the pawn shops, you can find one too. especially b4 xmas.
in my opinion, if you cand find a bbl for < $70 get another shotty and chop chop:) :)

do you think i need to change th ejector also? going to be a HD gun so all i need are 2 3/4 in. shells, right?

No you do not need to change the ejector. The 3" ejector is a skosh longer so the shell does not get bumped out until the open end clears the port. If you are only shooting 2 3/4" shells, no worries. In fact, you could probably get away with 3" shells as well.
I like 3" ejectors just because they allow me to "back-up" the shell a bit if I have a feed problem. With a 2 3/4" ejector, I tend to dump live rounds on the ground on the rare occasion that I need to re-feed, but that's another thread.
The important part is that the chamber of the barrel should be 3" to shoot 3" shells.
My HD guns are loaded with 2 3/4" Federals and I feel confident that they can get the job done.

18in. barrel for 870

again, thanks to all for the imput. this is a very active forum and i appreciate all the help. now that i know a 3in. barrel will fit, i'll try to find a used one. if it can't be found in a reasonable amount of time, i'll just buy a new one. the shop in watsonville can get me a mossberg for $95.00. i also agree with 9mm mike about the shells. 2 3/4in. should get the job done.

Mike,

Remington sells their "Police" 18" parkerized barrel with bead sight and improved cylinder choke for $96.00 plus shipping.

Best deal going now is mossber maverick for around 150 new with 18 inch barrell. Just like the 500 but with a trigger mounted safety.

18in. barrel for 870

spoke to remington on 12/5. they informed me that the current barrel will fit my receiver. i ordered the 18in. police barrel w/parkerized finish for $96.00 plus shipping. will post fitament results when it arrives. thanks cactus for the info.

I ran into this problem once. My guess is that the barrel you were trying to fit on your 870 reciever is actually a barrel off of a 870 special field model. The 870 special field has a shorter Mag tube and with no plug, will only hold 3 shells total in tube, and one in chamber. ( 4 total in gun ) The distance from reciever to barrel ring is much shorter on these 870 special field barrels and they will not fit any other 870 reciever other than the special field. Also the barrel will not be marked any where or any way different that a reg. 870 barrel. I'd be willing to bet it is actually a 21 inch barrel and not 18 inch. Another indication that its a special field barrel.:D
