1892 Lever choice

My Rossi(legacy sports) has been trouble free

If you really want to slick it up and even get rid of that useless safety, a lot of people swear by stevesgunz.com
You can buy one pre-tuned, or order his parts and video to do yourself.

Colt 46, I've read compliments about Steve's guns too. I actually have an e-mail into him on what a rifle costs with his action job.
No reply yet, but I did send it a day before Christmas.
I'm not a cowboy action shooter nor do I plan on hunting big game with it.
This is just to replace the "novelty gun" I let go awhile back. I don't know if you ever watched Hickok45 on Youtube, I have a similar shooting range at our camping property that "the guys" get together a few times during the nice weather months and blast things.
Everybody picks the levers to shoot as open sights and cycling the lever makes us all feel like Chuck Connors "The Rifleman"
(for those of you old enough to remember:D)

I'm pleased with my Winchester (Miroku) 92 Trapper Takedown in 357 Mag. It was pricy (my ooh and ah gun). I also have a Marlin 1894CSS and Ruger 77/357 to use as my kick-around-guns.

I have a habit of eventually selling something if it wasn't what I really wanted. So save your pennies and get what you really want (make it a keeper).

Yes, the Brownings are very well made and would be a great choice. I have one of the Browning 1886 SRC and like it so much that I decided I'd like one of their '92's in 38/357. That's been quite a while back and I have yet to see one for sell. The 1892 in .44 Mag seems to be much more plentiful out there, but I have noticed their prices rising pretty steadily.

I have bought (5) Win 92s in the last 2 years.

A 110 year old rifle can have more than a pound of dirt in it and some worn parts.

They are still fun to buy and own.

But with a Japanese Browning made 20 year old 1885 Win in 7mmRM, I got a decent group at 550 yards this year and then shot a mule buck and a buck antelope.

That is a serious jump in power and accuracy over my 1892s.

Rossi: is there any difference in quality or mechanical issues related to it's age or importer?
Thanks.

There can be. People say the current batch of Rossis are pretty good - maybe somebody at the factory ordered one of Steve's DVDs LOL.

I have an Interarms Rossi 92 roughly 20 years old that is very nice. Fit and finish are quite good, the only safety is the traditional half-cock hammer, and the little rifle (16" in .357) is amazingly accurate.

I love my Marlin chambered in .41 Rem Mag. 1894FG is the no longer made model.

Oh my--that rifle is at the top of my list as one of the most desirable! Let me know if you ever get bored with it. : )

Getting back to the rossi--here is a pic of my 16" SS carbine in 44 mag (yeah, I posted it elsewhere--I love glam shots: ) ).

When I first bought it I couldn't get it to group with a darn even at 25 yds and I came very close to heaving into the dumpster! I tried everything I could think of--and the action was functioning properly.

I eventually figured out that the barrel/mag band out at the muzzle was overly-tight; putting too much pressure on the barrel and torquing it. I ground down the ID of the band somewhat and that relieved the pressure on the barrel (I also free-floated the fore-end). With hot loads of h110/w296 driven bullets the gun is MOA or better at 100 yds now. Shooting 44 mag is actually fun with this carbine that only weighs 4.8 lbs. : ) Also, you can knock out the stock rear site and replace it with various peep sights--but they are a bit further out so not as effective as a peep closer to the eye on the tang.

My opinion is that the rossi can be made into a great shooter if you're willing to put up with some frustration. Some people do get lucky with great shooters right out of the box--but many don't. For $600 or more I think they are a bit over-priced for what you get--though you can do better if you don't need SS.
