short
I've got a 20" mannnicher stocked Mark X in '06 that is tolerable to shoot, not all that efficient, and a bit loud, but quite handy and a joy to carry. I load it it at about .300 Savage velocity, with 180 gr RN's at about 2450 fps, and it certainly is grim death on the deer around here.
But I'd think a 16" barrel on an '06 would be taking the concept a bit too far. Flash and noise would be excessive, as noted by so many others. I'd wait for a .308 if I were going that short on a .30 cal. And who knows how well done the barrel chop has been done? Thing might not shoot all that well.
