No, what legitimately took the place of the barricade revolver was the Gatling gun and other fixed/semi-fixed emplacement firearms.
If I remember my history correctly, they were a stop gap solution to give temporary high volume firepower to defensive positions against attack, until reinforcements were brought up. Not reliable or very accurate, and not widely produced. I could be wrong.
