Maryellen Mara-Christian stands 5 ft 5 inches and weighs only 120 lbs. When she initially hooked an alligator while hunting for them with her husband Mark and guide Kevin Davis, no one realized that the animal on the end of the line was a true monster: a behemoth that weighed close to 10 times her own weight!

But it turns out that Maryellen is no ordinary woman. She is an experienced and avid hunter who has killed deer, turkeys and bobcats and even harvested the first black bear taken in Worcester County, MA after Massachusetts reopened the season following a long hiatus. However, when she returned from her hunt in South Carolina, and local news media in Massachusetts reported to the public about her amazing accomplishment, she found herself in a situation that she had never faced before: being condemned by many for killing a wild animal.

Liberal blogs and online forums across Massachusetts had posts placed on them condemning her for her "slaughter" of the alligator.

Maryellen's battle to harvest this alligator was truly epic in nature. She fought the gator for a two full hours. She repeatedly snagged it using a large spinning rod spooled with braided line and treble snatch hook. The massive gator kept breaking the lines, though, which then required Maryellen to make yet another cast to snag it yet again. During the intense battle, 3 harpoons were also snapped in two by the powerful gator.

Finally exhausted after fighting the tenacious petite blonde for two hours, the monster was secured next to the boat. Maryellen then used a S&W Model 29 revolver to drill a .44 bullet into its skull to finish him off.

What an amazing woman Maryellen must be!! I cannot believe that so many in the Anti-hunting community are attacking her. But I guess that Massachusetts is not a very friendly hunting state. Still, Maryellen said that she will proudly have the animal's skull and tanned hide on display in her home. She said that all of her neighbors who know her support her, and admire her hunting skills.

So I nominate Maryellen Mara-Christian to be named HUNTER OF THE YEAR for 2010. She deserves recognition for this accomplishment, in my opinion.

Here are some photos taken of her with the monster gator, at the end of the hunt. I wonder if that gator could have swallowed her whole, given the opportunity?

She looks truly exhilarated in all of the initial photos. By the last one, however, a look of exhaustion seems to be on her face.

wow I haven't seen one more than 800 something pounds caught on "swamp people" yet which is in louisiana. that gator is huge. I guess the gator didn't have anywhere to run to

Mrs. Maryellen gets my vote for hunter of the year.

That gator is a fine specimen of fictitious size. Yes fictitious size cause thats what folks are gonna think when she tells em she killed a gator so big she had to leave her boat behind cause she needed the trailer to haul it.

I think we ought to invite all them animal lovers in boston to come down to
SANTEE COOPER to spend the weekend swimming its the leasted we could do.
:eek::D:D

Why is she wearing a yellow shirt (at the lake), then a white shirt in some pics and then a yellow one in the later ones? Did anyone think that was a little odd?

If there is one thing i know,,It's that PETA and those just push it to far.Im sure we are all animal lovers in here, but we kill in a human way to eat and i would assume all of us are against cruelty to animals. PETA and the likes are just a group of people that started down the right road and then just got lost in the game plan and drafted some people (movie stars):barf: that just push it to far in my book. That is one huge gator, swamp people are jelous of her for sure.

If she was legally hunting the animal...with all licenses needed.....poor animal lovers...who cares what the lovers think...big as that thing is... there has probably been a couple of animal lovers devoured by that thing. Lucky girl...looks like a once in a lifetime hunt.

The pics are not in chronological order.

It looks like she was wearing the yellow tee during the hunt and changed into the white polo later, probably because the yellow tee no doubt smelled like the three-day-old corpse of The Creature From The Black Lagoon by that point.

That is a Monster!!!!!!!!! I lived down in Reggio LA for a summer Crab fishing and had a chance to see some pretty big ones but, not that big! Wow!

These "Animal Lovers" have become "People Haters"!

WOW! What a gator. I would have loved to have seen that in person, or even better yet, be in another boat close by while they were catching that one.

People just do not understand the HSUS and PETA do not spend more than 1% of their budgets on animal welfare and keep donating to them. I wish more people would just donate to their local shelters.

I wonder if these same bloggers complain about deep sea sports fishing, in which they fight the fish for hours at a time?

I cannot believe that so many in the Anti-hunting community are attacking her.

Any hunter that makes the headlines gets attacked because its what anti hunting groups do. Attacking gets them headlines, getting headlines gets them donations. Pretty simple.

LOL, in looking up various accounts of the story, Maryellen either used a .22, .22 mag, or a .44 mag. Some list using a knife and some don't. In some reports, she is 46 and in others she is 48.

Based on the belly sag of the gator in some pics, it looks like it did consume something person-sized.

She's gonna a nice freezer full, more to sell, and enough hide for some nice leather apparel and accessories

I wonder what some of those MA bloggers would be feeling if that gator had snatched their little poodle from the bank.........or maybe their child
