Maryellen Mara-Christian stands 5 ft 5 inches and weighs only 120 lbs. When she initially hooked an alligator while hunting for them with her husband Mark and guide Kevin Davis, no one realized that the animal on the end of the line was a true monster: a behemoth that weighed close to 10 times her own weight!
But it turns out that Maryellen is no ordinary woman. She is an experienced and avid hunter who has killed deer, turkeys and bobcats and even harvested the first black bear taken in Worcester County, MA after Massachusetts reopened the season following a long hiatus. However, when she returned from her hunt in South Carolina, and local news media in Massachusetts reported to the public about her amazing accomplishment, she found herself in a situation that she had never faced before: being condemned by many for killing a wild animal.
Liberal blogs and online forums across Massachusetts had posts placed on them condemning her for her "slaughter" of the alligator.
Maryellen's battle to harvest this alligator was truly epic in nature. She fought the gator for a two full hours. She repeatedly snagged it using a large spinning rod spooled with braided line and treble snatch hook. The massive gator kept breaking the lines, though, which then required Maryellen to make yet another cast to snag it yet again. During the intense battle, 3 harpoons were also snapped in two by the powerful gator.
Finally exhausted after fighting the tenacious petite blonde for two hours, the monster was secured next to the boat. Maryellen then used a S&W Model 29 revolver to drill a .44 bullet into its skull to finish him off.
What an amazing woman Maryellen must be!! I cannot believe that so many in the Anti-hunting community are attacking her. But I guess that Massachusetts is not a very friendly hunting state. Still, Maryellen said that she will proudly have the animal's skull and tanned hide on display in her home. She said that all of her neighbors who know her support her, and admire her hunting skills.
So I nominate Maryellen Mara-Christian to be named HUNTER OF THE YEAR for 2010. She deserves recognition for this accomplishment, in my opinion.
Here are some photos taken of her with the monster gator, at the end of the hunt. I wonder if that gator could have swallowed her whole, given the opportunity?
She looks truly exhilarated in all of the initial photos. By the last one, however, a look of exhaustion seems to be on her face.
