12 ga 00 buckshot in 3" for a truck gun?

Cajun47 may not be from Florida
While this may be a safe assumption, it may not be so safe to assume he lives in a place that has penalty for carrying a loaded gun in a vehicle.

louisiana, pretty good about guns but still second to states that don't require any permit to conceal a handgun on your person. i can have 100 fully loaded ak47s in my truck. or more if i could figure out how to fit em in there. but all i want is a shotgun with a little reach if needed. better to have it and not need it than to need it and not have it huh?

sometimes i forget im talking to americans that may not live in a free america.

You got bad things coming your way when you call the police and tell them some one stole or broke in to truck and there is a loaded shot gun behind the seat.

I don't think this post meant bad legal things. Just a hard time from the police for letting a stolen, loaded gun get into the hands of a criminal. They will look into every thing they possible can to get you for something!!!

That's the same thing I meant in my post about wanting to shoot in self defence at 90 to 150 feet with the OP's shotgun scenario. May be perfectly legal, but in today's legal system you can still be in for a legal nightmare. Not only in criminal court, but in civil as well.
I wasn't going to ask in this thread, but it seems like it has gone this way anyhow. In just what case would you be able to identify your supposed assailant at 90 to 150 feet. You have to get to the shorgun, whereever it is kept in the truck, and be able to shoot from the truck, or outside of it. Wouldn't it be more prudent to just drive off!!! Also, at that distance, is that a gun, a camera, or a cell phone the assailant is holding?
I'm not sure what the OP meant with his comment "your type" anyway. What does he think my "type" is? Owner of firearms for hunting only, and not believe in self defense? If that's it, sorry Bucko, wrong! I have my CCW, carry everywhere. A Springer XD-40 Subcompact, Colt 1991A1 Compact, or LCP and even have what some may call a truck gun. I call it an anti car-jacking device! Taurus Public Defender Poly, first 3 uop, Winchester PDX1 Defence discs, followed by two 45 Colt Winchester PDX1 225 gr. bonded. Kept locked in a secure care safe when I'm not in the truck! Oh yea, and home defense shotgun? Not one of my hunting shotguns that I want to carry in my truck with buckshot for 30, or better 50 yard shots, but this 870 loaded with military grade buckshot for possible home intruders.

So Mr. Cajun47, what is my type?

In just what case would you be able to identify your supposed assailant at 90 to 150 feet.
Just one possibility would be a crazed individual with a full power long gun who has fired at you already...
Also, at that distance, is that a gun, a camera, or a cell phone the assailant is holding?
In the above viable possibility you would know it were a firearm as it has been fired at you already...

You may not be inside with deep tinted windows rolled up to help hide your location inside the truck...

You might be pinned down on the passenger side of the truck which isn't yet running as shooter closes the distance but the loaded shotgun under the seat is accessible from the passenger side entry way...

You might win the lottery, or get struck by lightning too!

If this is the scenario you fear, why not an AR, so you have even more range?
The OP has already said he want's to cram as many AK47's as he can in his truck.
i can have 100 fully loaded ak47s in my truck. or more if i could figure out how to fit em in there.
I know it's just a silly exageration to make a point, but does he have any idea how "Mall Ninja" he is starting to sound!

Cheap, you asked and I gave one possibility... Sure I could win the lottery... but I have been shot at more times than I won $50 or more...

As for why a shotgun rather than the rifle with more range? Simple, the preponderance of use would likely be closer in. The shotgun is quicker to accurately use in closer than a rifle is. But it has the ability to reach out if needed.

But this is my opinion on the subject and not that of the OP...

the reviews at midway seem to like the remington and federal 3" 00 buckshot with a whopping 15 pellets per shot for dropping deer at 50+ yards.

I'd wager that many folks posting those reviews on Midway don't know the difference between 50 yards and 50 feet.............but that's another issue.

Really and truly, more pellets is no substitute for a better patterning load. When your pattern is larger than the torso of your target where are the stray pellets gonna go? A good question, that you don't want resolved by random chance and a jury of your peers. Round lead balls also tend to bounce and ricochet easily off of flat hard surfaces like vehicle bodies, brick walls, etc (thus increasing the odds of your fate being resolved by random chance and a jury of your peers).

Check www.ammunitiontogo.com or www.ammoman.com for Federal LE12700 flite control buckshot. It's probably actually cheaper than the 15 pellet load you're considering or at least as cheap and both online retailers offer excellent customer service and fast shipping. If they don't have it in stock now, keep checking back. It's a fairly regular item at both.

Once you get outside the range where even the flite control wad is effective at keeping a good pattern, slugs...........that's sorta why they were invented........

Stay safe.....

Yea, I know the crazed gunman thin could happen, but with about the same possibility as my examples. Lots more up close, and personal threats to worry about. Don't know though about the OP, Maybe Cajun country gets wilder than any of us know!
Legality's aside, I don't think a shotgun with buckshot would be that effective at the ranges he stated. "30 yards, or 50 would be even better". Those little round balls don't have much of a ballistic coefficient, and loose a lot quick!

Many a deer have dropped in their tracks at those distances... Now a drugged up 300 pond feller in thick clothing may laugh it off...

I would use 50 as my max distance with 00 but know many guys who routinely shoot them at 50 yards.

You can see how effective they are down here where runnin' deer dogs is legal and common... Not many deer are standing still when shot in front of dogs...;)
