110g .357 Magnum for self defense

Just curious, Jacobs said the Silvertips had to be paid for by the agents, at least at first. Were they issued later?

Japle,

No. The issue load from about 1992 until we transitioned to 40 in 1996 ( depending on where you were, I was in El Paso) was the 125 Grain Remington JHP. I do not recall for sure how long we were issued the 110's but think it was only 2 years. I carried the 145 STHP as a cop in Ft Worth, Texas and it worked for us there as well. I carried the STHP for about 10 years as a duty load. I think for SD the best loads for the 357 Magnum are the 125 to 145 grain bullets and they still rival anything out there.

Hey Japle , how close to the pig was ya ??? & weight ???
The pig came out of the brush, running fast at about 15 feet. That was the smallest one I've shot, only 100 lbs or so. Two quick DA shots through the body and out the opposite shoulder did the trick.

My nephew is a Detective with Scranton, PA police department. He recommends the 110 grain bullet for self defense. That's good enough for me.

I obviously want to stay away from the "full house" loads. So, in a 3" SP101, 125g/158g .38 +p or 110g .357? There are some super hot .38 +p's out now, maybe that makes more sense.

110 +P+ Treasury Load

For the front part of my career, the agency issue ammo was the above .38 spl load. As I recall it was alleged to run about 1200 fps from a 4" revolver. I used it on a number of ferals, deer injured in deer v. auto MVA's and from a Marlin 1894 on groundhogs. From a revolver, I was never much impressed with the results. The carbine obviously boosted it to another level.

About 1990 or so the agency had 2-3 shootings, and there was dissatisfaction with none involving clean "stops". There was a mad rush to the .357 mag w/ 125 JHP afterwards. We never had a shooting with mag ammo.

One old hand FI at FLETC told me that from lot to lot, supplier to supplier, the T- loads ability to actually make 1200 fps was not consistent. Another (Border Patrol I think) told me his outfit was satisfied with it in a number of shootings.

No matter, within 5 years, revolvers were largely removed from service and replaced initially with SIG P228 autos, and a 147 JHP standard pressure 9mm ammo.. I was really not impressed with that combo. I doubt it broke 1000 fps from the stubby P228 barrel. We never had a shootng with 9mm/147 either.

All that said, I would make the jump to 125's if I could manage them, for sure from a K or larger size revolver. From a snubby, I would go the other direction, abandoning hope of expansion from 2" tubes and going traditional with a 158 LSWC

Bama,

The Border Patrol used magnums the entire time I was in 1988. The 147 grn 9mm pretty much mimicked the power and effectiveness of the 38 special.

I load a 95 grain sjhp over 8.5 grains of Unique. It will knock a soda can futher than anything else I ever tried.

I will remember that if ever attacked by Zombie Coke cans....:D

I have shot the 110 grain Hornady bullets over 22.6 grains of H110 in my marlin. They where more accurate than you might guess they would be. I think they would work well on varmints but I bet they would explode on flesh. They where Chronographing about 2450fps if I remember correctly.

i have fired both the remingotn and win white box 110 gr 357s...both are sjhp. reported velocity is around 1300fps and both felt milder in a taurus 65 than any shelf 125gr 357 round i have fired. both brands of 110gr grouped very well for me and the remingotns can be periodically found in the low twenty dollar range for 50 rounds. both 110gr 357 are more powerful than any 38sp+p though on the low end of 357 mag scale.

i like them and and feel sure they are very adequate for self defense.
