10mm vs 40S&W

Hodgdon's Longshot shows a max of 8 grs in the .40 S&W using 180 gr. XTPs and OAL of 1.125 inchs and gives 1159 from a 4 inch barrel.

Now visualize using a 3ed gen Glock 22 (4.48 inch barrel) with 21 lb spring and just slightly increase the OAL to 1.150.

I'm gonna try just that this week with my Glock 22 (and yep, it has a 21 lb recoil spring) and I'll chrono just to see what it gets. If it hits 1200 fps and gives decent 3 inch 25 yard groups then it makes my Glock a pretty decent woods gun.

I've shot 3000 thru the G29, No leading w/ the cast bullets (.401, BRN 18)I'm using.

Mainly because I'm such a frugal bast*rd, I'm past 2K rounds of fired reloads using 10mm poly-coated lead boolits of various weights in 10mm/.40-cal.

My current favorite for plinking is SNS's red-coated 220gn poly-lead FPs pills @ about 1200fps from my Glock 40 MOS longslide. Talk about hearing a down-range thump! ... wow! ;)

Not only is there no leading in the stock Glock tube after a range session, but the poly-coating is slick on the feed ramp and I've not had one jam or failure to feed in said 2K rds.

At least for economical practice, training, or Sunday afternoon 'plinking' ammo, the poly-coated lead boolits are the way to go if you reload for your 10mm, ... and likely for the .40 too.

Well Duck, one day I might get a Bar-Sto .40 barrel. Accuracy is what I want once I get the velocity!

I've loaded three 5 shot samples using virgin Hornady .40 brass and 180 grain XTP JHPs with OAL of 1.38 inches. I even dropped live rounds, both factory and the reloads, into the barrel chambers. All go right up to the extractor grove as for support of the case.

7.5, 7.8, and 8.0 grains of Longshot. 8.0 is what Hodgdon gives for max.

Tomorrow to the range! Again if the accuracy is 3 inch 25 yard groups and the velocity is around 1200 fps, I'll quit while I am ahead (I have a chronograph.)

I've shot that 8g Hodgdon loading in my M&P40 and it's a hand full for sure.

Brass ejection was energetic to say the least but it shot accurately and brass didn't show excessive pressure that I could see with the naked eye.

Still, I came away thinking that was too hot for the small frame gun and dropped back to 1000 feet for regular use. I have a 10mm Glock if I want more power....

Now, I also have a 357 SIG barrel for my M&P and that shoots great in that gun even up to 1500 fps with a 125 TMJ....

Which caliber can you shoot more accurately? Which one can you afford (pistol and ammo)?

If power is your main concern, you may want to consider a 12 gauge shotgun rather than any pistol; a shotgun is a fierce home defense firearm. JMHO, and good luck, my friend.

Ok so far so good.

Today was a fun day. The 8.0 load did fine. Ejected cases look great. They were all about 6 ft from the gun (I suspect the 21 lb spring had something to do with that.) Groups at 25 yard hovered at 3 inches with a somewhat shaky hold on top of the bench and my canteen!

Velocity averaged just over 1198 fps. But the OAL needs to be a tad shorter. They just fit into the mags with very little room to spare. I'll try 1.30 inch OAL next and maybe 8.1 grains.

But folks, this is from MY gun. If you want to handload start like I did 10 percent less than max and slowly work your way up.

Oh, and then I shot a bunch of .38s from my new practice J airweight Centennial. Two handed with appendix draw at 10 yards and one handed draw and shoot at 5 and 3. Loved every minuet of it!

180gr Hornady xtp with 13.8 gr of AA#9 yields 1250fps. out of my 1911 10mm.
From a bench rest it produces an 1-1/2 group at 25 yrds.
Thought some non glock info might be appreciated.

For self-defense, go with a standard capacity; e.g., 15 rounds .40 S&W with 180 grain Federal HST Tactical ammo.

I was interested in a G20 or a G29 but for me the grip was too large. So I bought a G23 because it fit my hand better, and bought a G32 barrel so I can shoot .357 Sig too. In .40 S&W the Federal 180 grain HST is a great load, and in .357 Sig the Underwood 125 grain bonded HP delivers 604 ft. lbs of energy and more than 1450 fps. Not too shabby. The size of a G23 works better for me.

I am not a 10mm guy but REAL 10mm is basically .40S&W Magnum or super if you will much like .38 special is to .357 Magnum or .38 Super.

Does that matter in SD.......probably not hugely.

Is it more powerful......yep.

I have no problem with high energy 10MM loads in my Glock 40 MOS. Easy to get a second shot, recoil is not an issue. It fits my hand, my pocket book, and does what I want it to do. I don't own any .40 S&W chambered pistols. Used to, but the 10MM Auto is a better cartridge from every standpoint.

A person may not want to go to the door with a shogun at the ready just because of some uncertainty about who might be there or why. Hence have both.

I also take the opportunity to say this has been a good education for me regarding the two 40 cal pistols.

The 10mm was a little much for some people, so the S&W .40 was introduced. Now the .40 is being dumped for the 9mm. Will everybody be happy when we get back to cap guns?

The 9mm cannot be that bad a choice for the average person and for concealed carry. It is used by what? 90% of the world military and in hardball no less. A fair bit of practice and a large dose of presence of mind and a 9mm should leave a person very well equipped.

You must be pretty young not to remember all the 32 and 380. Even 25 acp. Those are a lot less popular today. Even some military used the 380 or the little Mauser rounds.

For men, not girls, in police and military with open carry. My vote is a double stack 45acp. Seems a waste of time, splitting the difference. Or any law enforcement should be an individual choice. Fortunately, I am not in that position and god bless those who put them selves in harms way

But, I can see the 40's might work for a few where splitting the difference works out just right. Its been an interesting read.

That is a bad rationalization. The handgun use in the military plays a different role than a civilian carrier in the US. The military context is different.

Many of those military's that used mouse gun pistols were more of a badge of office than anything else. Mouse guns had a place 30 years ago, now you can get 9mm's smaller than some of the old 32's.
