10mm Speer Gold Dot 180 grain bullet velocities

This is on par with the video that was posted, as to what happens when they are pushed to far.

And keep in mind I used a Glock 22 with factory barrel to achieve this. This is just a representation of bullet failure due to sheer velocity and energy being well above the design limits.

Just think, this is a 40s&w load, not 10mm.

Well you got pictures, so it had to have happened right? Can't argue with that.

It isn't something I have seen with some of the ones I have recovered from critters, but there it is. I have seen them all mangled up from hitting heavy bone, but the majority of them look like they were taken from the advertising brochure.

I'm running mine over 13grs of AA-9 with a MV of just over 1300fps from a 7" barrel. They hit like the Hammer of Thor on a hog, and I usually get full penetration on them up to around 150# with a shoulder shot.

I have never seen them preform like what is in the video or pictured above.

That said though, there it is in vivid color....

Oh I know that they hit hard, I'm not dogging them at all. I use them personally myself. I wouldn't change a thing for hunting Mike.

The issue for me is, I would like to see companies produce bullets that can withstand the velocity of the 10mm and not come apart.

Hornady does a good job with this, but the penetration is slightly excessive for self defense. Hunting applications, they are great.

Hopefully with the 10mm coming back into popularity, the major manufacturers will recognize the need to do so.

That's why I stated that the 165gr is great because it does withstand the velocity increase from 40 to 10mm and I have yet to see one fail like a 180gr.

A while back Rocky mountain reloading had pulled federal hst's for sale, 180gr's. They hold together very well at over 1400fps. It mushroomed perfectly, it did shed 35gr of weight about 8 inches into a whitetail deer and was found lodged between the opposite shoulder blade and the skin. A little bigger than a nickel in diameter.

Yep and I got 500 of them just to see how they shot. Wished I had gotten 1K now they shoot very good. Good to hear they do well otherwise too, I just haven't had any chance to use them on anything but paper yet...;)

I think the biggest deal with the 180 GD is that huge gaping maw on them. The 165's have that shallower mouth similar to some of the 357's and not as deep of a cavity. I was looking at some yesterday afternoon after pouring up some of my cast HP's. I'm hoping that the cast I poured aren't overly explosive. I'll just have to try them and see what happens.

I'm still not settled on the bullet I will use for my 10mm. I may end up going with the 155 gr 10mm Barnes TAC-XP. Since they are not a bonded projectile, it would seem you would not have to worry about separation.

Hey like I said you don't have to load them to nuclear velocities, but if you're wanting the 1300fps realm go with the 165gr gold dots. They hold together very well. Speer loads the 165gr in two velocities, a reduced of 1050? And 1150fps in 40.

Nothing wrong with those Barnes tac-xp bullets other than price per round goes up, still cheaper than buying factory though!

I use the 115gr 9mm. I've got them hitting around 1200fps from my Glock 19 gen 4
