natchez has the lowest price on scopes i have found

zeiss 6.5X20-50 milldot $1049.99

sightron 6X24-50 mildot 759.99

nikon monarch 6X24-50 649.95 not mildot

bushnell elite tactical 6X24-50 mildot 789.99

all are good scopes and good glass take your pick but go to natchez and midway and look at there scopes both have really good prices

Before you buy any scope, know the difference between a tactical scope and a target scope. If you want the ultimate target scope, you won't buy it for $1,000.00. The guys shooting the long yardages are using the March scopes. I have a friend shooting the 1 mile game with a 60 power March scope and the clicks are repeatable at 1 mile. It's the clearest scope I've ever looked thru especially for a high power scope. There is a waiting list if you decide to gather the extra money for one. In my opinion, they are worth the high price if you intend to shoot long yardages. As compared to my Leupold 6.5-20 Target scope on my 40X, the Leo looks like a cheap Tasco by comparison.

Vortex Viper PST

Sightron S3

Those are the only two I would personally consider before you start seeing some serious diminishing gains.

I'd wager the Sightron had better glass, but the Vortex has alot of features.

Loader9: You did catch the part of the OP's post about the round being a .308, right?? You don't need a ton of scope for ~1K yards. And for under $1000 I doubt you are going to find a more reliable turret tracking system than Sightron.

Vortex Viper PST and get it in second focal plane. The reticle will have the same subtension on all power settings thereby giving you range finding ability on any setting. You may have been there already but here is a link anyway http://vortexoptics.com I have 2 Vortex viper scopes and I am very pleased. Clear glass and repeatable. Awesome warranty and the folks in the cs dept. are great to deal with. ( I have not had any problems with the scopes but my friend at the lgs says they are the easiest he has ever dealt with.)

Same subtensions are on first focal planes, not second. Unless you plan on doing tactical shooting a FFP is not critical... Just more $$ and the reticle itself shrinks or enlarges with power setting. I prefer the constant size of second focal reticles, especially shooting between 700-1k since larger FFP reticles can often overlay your target too much. Mil dot ranging is not complicated... or just get a laser rangefinder.

Thank you brmfan, It has been a while since I looked into focal plane and studied it. My mistake. If you want to use mil dot range finding you will have to have the scope set on the correct power on a second focal plane scope. If you don't want to worry about that get the first focal plane scope. Each has its drawbacks. Only you can decide which will fit your style shooting.

No worries Big Al! Actually you brought up a critical point. If ranging with a second plane scope the power setting is key. If you're unsure check with the mfg. which is the correct power setting for ranging. Usually it is the max setting but you should always confirm. And get yourself a Mil Dot Master.

Shop around for a used IOR 4-14x50 First Focal Plane with illuminated reticle. They were under a grand new, so you should be able to get one used for even less.

They use Schott Glass (same as Zeiss) and are built like a tank.

I used to think that first focal planes were cool until you crank the zoom down and see the reticle shrink into oblivion

I really like the Sightron SIII scopes.I currently have 2 of the 6-24x50 LRMD's and I'm getting 2 more with the MOA-2 reticle to replace the scopes on 2 other rifles.
The glass is great, they also track perfectly and have 100moa of adjustment.Plus the warranty is also lifetime, and they will just send you another scope if you have any problems with yours.

I haven't seen any optics that will touch the Sightrons for less than double their price.I have even put my Swarovski PH on another rifle, and replaced it with a Sightron SIII,they're that good!

I'm tempted to come in here and pull the "that's not enough for a good scope" talk you hear on these boards all the time no matter what someone says they want to spend.

I'd love to be in your shoes. Shop around for sure, but I do love the Vortex Viper PST and all Leupolds in your price range....shoot I love every scope in this price range haha! :D
