FrankenMauser, I'm going to totally disagree with you and side with Lockedcj7 on this one. I also hunt in the deep woods/swamps of FL. Yes, sitting in a tree stand I'll be faced with a 20 to 70 yd shot. However, walking to and from that tree stand they will frequently be pastures, crop fields, powerlines, or other open areas that are more than 500 yds across. If I foolishly sighted in for only a 100yd max shot, then I'd be severely short-changing myself.
In fact, that is the reason I carry the rifle I do today. I used to hunt with a 30-30 because it was short and light in the stand. I assumed that using Lever-Evolution ammo (good to about 200 yds in that particular gun) that I would be able to handle any situation I found myself in. I was wrong. 3 seasons ago, the one and only chance I had to get a doe during our short doe season would have been a 300 yd shot. I saw 2 does feeding in a bean field as I was walking to the stand. I didn't take the shot because I did not have confidence I could reach out to 300 yds with that rifle. Today, I carry a short-barreled Rem Model Seven in .260 that is just as short and light as the 30-30 it replaced. However, it is sighted in at about 220 yds and I could easily make a 300 yd shot with it.
