$100 .22 semi for plinking

What are a few options I should look for at gun shows and online auctions?

Just want an inexpensive .22 semi that I can leave at the farm.

I think
Marlin 60, Westernfield M846, ...?

I picked up a Marlin 795 for $100 brand new a couple months ago (great deal on a pre-Christmas sale). I would imagine they should be at east that cheap, possibly cheaper at a gunshow or auction. I have been very happy with it.

+1^
The 795 is a great .22! And the most reliable and accurate I own. This is coming from a guy who owns five 22 rifles (the 795, Marlin 60, Savage model 6, GSG carbine, and an old Glenfield bolt) and shoots them at least once every 2 weeks. I'm going to but a second in a few months so I can have one with a scope and the other with irons. I've shoot a few Ruger 10/22s, and I do not like them. I think the 10/22 is out of your price bracket anyway seeing as how they generally start in the low $200s.

Buy a 795. You will not regret it.

Another happy Marlin 795 owner here. It shoots better than a $99 rifle has a right to;) My youngest son puts a few hundred rounds a week through it without any issues.

Marlin 60

OP mentioned a Marlin 60 as an option: I have an old Glenfield 60, which is the same rifle if I am not mistaken. I know it's old because I got it when I was 13, and it was far from new then! at any rate, it has been the best $60 I ever spent on a firearm and does me quite well for the same purpose the OP suggested.

I also have a BL-22 and a 10/22, but neither of them match the accuracy of the Glenfield.

+1 Tom. My 60 is actually a Glenfield as well, and I really dig the gun. Most 60s I've seen hold 14 in the tube, but mine holds 18:D Is this true of all the old Glenfields? How many does yours hold Tom?

Marlin 795 :)

Here's one of mine, upgraded with a Ramline Folder, SR Bipod, Razor sling, BSA scope on see-thru's, and adjustable target rear sight
fullsize

Of course, if you were in NW Florida, I could point you to a Marlin/Glenfield model 75...
which is on sale at an LGS for $69.95 :D

you have to shop around a bit but you can find marlin model 60s or 795s for around that maybe $20 more after tax and everything. I regret getting rid of my model 60.

Richard, mine holds 18 in the tube as well. the only drawback? counting rounds if you're trying to avoid clicking on an empty chamber :)

Another vote for the Marlin 60 here.

I know you can find them for around 100 used and in great condition.

I got mine new for 150 and I absolutely love it. It is IMHO the best .22 for the money. All of the squirrels in Albemarle County can attest to its accuracy and reliability:D

When I bought my mossberg plinkster a few years back it was around $92 but Im sure they have gone up. Its a very accurate rifle, unfortunatly you get what you pay for. So far though it has held up suprisingly well and is reliable and accurate. Im just not sure how long it will last. I dont think longevity was on anyone's mind when it was designed. Its a very cheaply made rifle.

DO NOT...I REPEAT DO NOT...get the Savage 64F. Bought one from Wal Mart lasted about 150 rounds and wouldn't autofeed. Sent it in they sent me a new one (so they say) and it lasted about 400 rounds then wouldn't fire unless I was holding it upside down. Its broke down in a box right now and I wouldn't waste the time trying to ship it or fix it.

I have a marlin 795 and its a jam-o-matic. Won't fire more than 2-3 rounds without a jam. I took some advice off a rimfire site so I'm going to give it one more chance.

What kind of jam??

If the other site is RFC, or Gun&Game, or Marlin Owners, we've got ya covered there ;)

Biggest thing, avoid Remington rimfire ammo, that stuff is worthless.
second, make sure your mag lips are set properly
third, check your stock/action screws to make sure they're not too tight

I have right around 1000 rounds through mine since mid December, and I have had all of 4 or 5 firing issues, all related to inconsistant ammo (Remington golden). Check the lips on the mag and give it a good cleaning... most likely culprits, in my opinion. I still say the 795 is one of the best values for what the OP is looking for.

Its really stiff opening or closing the bolt just after the first 1/3 (opening) or last 1/3 (closing). As far as the failures, ftf, ft extract, and ft eject. Often resulting in either the bolt not fully closing with a round in the chamber, round not extracting and a fired shell case half stuck in the chamber, and failure to eject with two rounds stuck in the action. I've tried using CCI's, some from those 550 bulk packs, and even tried some of that high dollar black box from wally world. But the bolt gets sticky even without ammo in it. I've also tried silicon spray dry lube, heavy duty grease, clp, and b'laster for lubes. The thing is just a POS jam-o-matic.

My marlin 795 has been an awesome gun 2000 rounds or so through and the only only issue is the bolt hold open doesn't always work.

oh, I've only cleaned it once!

Its just a marlin 60 modified for a box mag, the reciever even has the hole for the tube mag. The 60 is far easier to load but the 795 has high cap offerings if you live in a free state (I don't) :(
