1-4x Scope?

Leupold VX-III

years ago I bought a Leupold VX-III when I was rich and single. That is the best low power scope that I ever had. I have it now mounted on a AR-15 and always amazed at how clear it is compared to my other "cheaper" scopes. The cheap ones work but not as clear and crisp as the Leupold VX-III. Spend a little more money and enjoy it for a life time.

got my Leupold Mark AR 3-9x with the Burris PEPR an hour ago...damn, this thing is awesome...I can't get rid of the grin

my friends tell me not to get married...stay "rich and single" LOL

Slightly more than $300, but we have been very pleased with our Leatherwood CMR 1-4x with illuminated reticle and etched BDC. It's made in China, but you'd never know it. Glass is extremely clear edge to edge, tracking is tight and consistent.

Nikon makes a M-223 in 1-4x and is priced very competitively. it's what I'd buy. I am pretty loyal to Nikon as they've performed well for me and don't break the bank. Nothing I currently shoot requires Nightforce Optic level performance.

I don't like 20mm front objectives, not enough light transmission for me. I generally recommend a 2-7X32 to get a bigger objective. They do make a few 1-4's with larger objectives though. Don't forget to look at eye relief. The longer the better.

I recently purchased the Nikon M223, which is very similar to the African. Mine does not have the 223 BDC, it has the one large dot in the middle. I actually like this because at 1x magnification, not only is it a true 1x, but the reticle actually acts kinda like a red dot sight.

The glass is clear and the knobs work nicely. My only complaint is the magnification adjustment is really stiff, but I assume that will break in.

If you do get the 223 I would recommend the Nikon mount for it. It's $75, but worth it to have the scope with the correct angle when mounted.

parallex

watch out for a short range parallex setting on a low powered scope, esp one intended for shotguns. Could give you some fits at longer ranges possible with an accurate AR.

On a 4 power scope anything past 28mm (for big eyes) won't get your image any brighter. The limit there is the human eye. Yes, I know that is a little bigger than 20mm, but most straight tube styles seem to actually be 24mm so it's close.
