$1,200 - what would you buy or build?

i'm guessing that's Claro walnut? Weatherby has some great looking rifles that use Claro walnut
Yep! And yes they do!
Have seen a couple of very nice stocks in maple as well...

So many choices out there! I have until about October to figure it out though, so in the meantime I'm enjoying the shopping. It's kind of like hunting, enjoy the HUNT as much as the actual taking of the animal. :)

Really enjoyed looking at Shaw's custom stuff. Sounds like I could come out of there in my price range... the helical barrel is pretty nifty looking. It's the wood though that means the most to me. A nice piece of high grade wood.

Build an 03A3 / Mauser action, Douglas Supreme Barrel, Manlicher Stock with double set triggers and a nice turned down bolt.

Hah... yes, I was actually hoping for a good variety! :) Only stipulations I set were bolt action, nice wood an around $1200.
Have had acouple if really interesting suggestions here and in PM so far.
It's all fun! Bunch of people talking about something they enjoy.

Scope now ... haha, thats a whole 'nother can o worms! Leaning towards Vortex maybe. Planning around $400 for optics.

that's another topic entirely that's sure to increase your budget :D. I'd say you'd be safe with the top 3 names that have been thrown about here - Nikon, Leupold and Zeiss. I picked up a Leupold VX3 from midwayusa.com for $430 (after a $50 discount) not too long ago. But, you'll have to research your needs and wants before you take the plunge.

So you have $1600.00 for the total project? Buy a nice, heavy barrell Savage for $800.00 and then go get all the scope you can cram into the other $800.00. High quality glass is as important as any other option on a rifle like this, especially if its a hunting rifle.

All modern day scopes are pretty clear in the daylight but you really start to see the seperation when the witching hour starts creeping in.

Savage are great actions with great accuracy. I will never own one though because IMHO they're f-ugly. No offense to savage owners but thats just me.

Love Savage actions and triggers... but they pretty much miss the boat on being "a thing of beauty" ;)
Maybe something from the Savage custom shop would work.

The idea of a Shaw came up a little back. I just got a quote from them and i am surprised as can be.

I used their gun builder to put together a .22-250 varmint rifle with a nice wood stock and they quote me under 800. the only down side is the 16 month lead time.

For $1330 I can build a Savage based 7mm-08.
Savage left port target action.
Heavy fluted SS bull barrel 26"
Medallist Stock
Ground recoil lug
Bipod
Konus 8.5-32x52 scope

And that is my plan.

I'm pretty much in the same boat - buy off the shelf or piece something together. Been pondering it for 3 months now but I'm going after an entry level target rifle - it doesn't have to be pretty for me, but it can be wild looking!

The Winchester 70 Super Grade as well as the Sako and others are REALLY nice. But you may be able to piece something together that would be truely beautiful AND unique within your budget like Rattletrap has suggested.

Maybe Shaw will sell you a barreled action without the stock and then you could drive yourself nuts with all the wonderful stock options out there? From what I understand Shaw uses Savage actions and Savage uses some of Shaw's barrels - Bingo - Quality and performance at a reasonable price!

Then you can make improvements as $$$ permits like having the bolt jeweled, engravings, put your initials on the floorplate, gold plated trigger :D etc. If you go with a stainless barrel PLEASE do not put a black scope on it and if you can't put an appropriate scope (read - not cheap) on it just wait until you can.

There are so many options out there...

bigredhemi,

I didn't know that I had made a fashion disaster by putting a matte black scope on a stainless rifle. I thought it looked Ok with the black stock. Anyway, I'll probably do something eventually to color the stainless barrel. I feel like I have a flashlight in my hands, with it being so bright (even though it isn't a shiny stainless).

Black scope with a stainless barrel on a black synthetic stock isn't that bad... black scope with a stainless barrel and WOOD stock would be not so great! :barf:
I should be able to get suitable optics in the $400 range I'm planning for. :)

I think I'd try to find a Weatherby Vanguard in a 7mm Rem Mag, synthetic stock,Put some bases and rings, (leupold), some killer glass,(leupold), work on its barrel channel, work up some crazy accurate handloads,,,,,,,,and take my beautiful wife out to dinner on the rest!!!!:D

The fashion police ARE out there!

I don't know - at the risk of taking this thread in another direction, it's like brown socks with black shoes but not as bad as one brown sock, one blue sock, with black sandals (lol). I admit it - I have done the brown socks/black shoes before but it wasn't my fault!!!

I have a black scope & rings mounted on a stainless barrel with a medium brown stock and I just can't stand the looks of it. Uck-Pooie! I was even told about it in my shooting group - "Hey Mike - that really looks stupid". I just mumbled 'I know' and hung my head in shame. Not what I would consider beautiful or sharp looking and that's what Sir-Nothing is looking for.

I violated one of the universal laws - I'm gonna go to the basement right now and take that black scope off of that stainless barrel before something terrible happens!

(guys, please don't flame me - just having some fun with you and it's just an opinion...)

I think the first thing I'd do would be to >

> talk to a gunsmith.

Maybe I'm out of my gourd for even mentioning it, but what if you found a 'smith and said: "Could you build me a custom rifle for $1200?"

if not, try: "What would you recommend I do to get a nice rifle for $1200?"

He might say: "Buy a stock Savage, then turn it over to me for a barrel/float job." or something like that.

If you really can't have a 'smith build you something nice in that range, I've loved the lines of the classic Winchesters. I'd probably go that route.

What rifles have you got so far? Just the lightweight?

Have you considered a nice lever action in 30-30 or 44 Magnum? Either of those would make a GREAT deer gun. (stand or no)

Over the years I have owned...
Remington 700 in .243
Winchester 94 in .30-30
Winchester 70 in .308
Marlin .22

Various shotguns and handguns as well. I also spent a fair amount of time with my dad's and grandfather's guns, including a Sako and a Weatherby. Don't remember models or calibers, I just remember that Weatherby just about took my shoulder out of it's socket! Sure did look nice though.

Currently I own a Tikka T3 Lite synthetic stock, .270 (have a 9mm handgun, .22 handgun, .20ga shotgun and an ancient .410 as well).

My Tikka is my "solid, all around, do most everything you could ever need, light-weight, drag through the woods and mud" rifle.

This fall will be my 40th birthday and I'm buying myself a nice, bolt action, wood stocked gun, with NICE wood. Not a Savage with laminate stock or a Vanguard with synthetic stock, or a lever gun, or TWO Savages with money left over, or... you get the idea. :) The criteria I am looking for are all in my first post.
I'm sort of banking on the idea that I'm pretty sure my wife will be supplying the optics as her birthday present to me. ;) She knows my plan to buy myself a nice rifle, and she knows it'll need a nice scope to go with it. I've been feeding her info on makes and models I'm interested in. She's really good at making a note of such things, so I'm pretty hopeful.

Don't get me wrong, I love just about any gun, including Savages with laminate stocks... they're just not what I am currently lusting after.

Talking to a couple of local smiths is on my list of places to research. The fact that it'll be October before I'm looking to make a move means I have a ton of time to shop!

$1200? I'd build a new deck. Don't need any more guns. OK....maybe a Sig 245. But that's all. Actually a new deck would be better.
