Marlin model 60

I have a 10/22 already, but I have read soo many awesome reviews that talk soo highly about the M60... Is it worth buying? Particularly the M60 SB... What does this model usually run?, money isn't a problem.. I just haven't seen any in my area to look at prices and hold one?

Marlin Model 60s are a good gun, but nowhere near the quality and durability of the 10/22. You will hear tales of fantastic accuracy and amazing shots, but when it all comes down to it, the Model 60 is just another 22 semi-auto rifle. IMO, the 10/22 has the edge with its detachable mags and sturdier construction.

A model 60 is hardly the holy grail of .22s.
But it is an excellent low cost rifle, with accuracy and reliability equal to more expensive ones.
New ones sell for the $150 to $250 range.
Used ones for about 2/3s that, in at least very good condition, the only ones you want.
Since a model 60 is a semi auto, isn't this in the wrong forum section?

I have a couple of them. One I bought used, and it wouldn't function. It turned out to be so cruddy inside with powder fouling the bolt wouldn't cycle right. I took it apart and gave it a total cleaning, and it's 100 percent reliable once again.

I agree they're not the holy grail of 22 semi-autos (I like my Browning BAR-22 in that regard), but the Model 60 is probably the best *value* in 22 semi-autos out there.

I prefer it to any 22 with a detachable box mag, as those can get lost. It's a heck of a lot of fun to fill that 15 shot tube on the Model 60 and pepper down on something... :o

I agree with Dan. It is by far the most accurate and best rifle you can buy for the money. I paid $110 for mine about 9 or 10 years ago. It is very accurate and very dependable. Seems like anyone who is or was into rifles has one or has had one. I plan on keeping my Marlin 60, my Marlin 25 mag. and my Henry lever action 22lr the rest of my life. However, when I want to shoot, there is just something about the Henry that makes me choose it nearly every time.

Scorch + 1

Even though I prefer the 10/22, I surely would not discourage anyone from buying a mod-60. I would add that even though Ruger is making the 10/22 cheaper, they are still that good. Between the two, the only one that "might" catch my interest, is the "older" 10/22's. .... ;)

The best model-60 that I have owned, was actually a model-66 and regret ever selling it. .... :(

Be Safe !!!

Thousands of rounds through the ol' girl... killed many a critter.

It'd be hard to part with.

I have had a couple Marlin model 60s they were great guns I like them better then the 10/22 The barrel on the 60 is larger and I can get better shots with it.

The only thing I don't really like about the 60 is the tube feed is cumbersome to me, to pull out the tube in the field and try to hold it under my arm while I feed bullets into it.

not sure if there's anything special about the SB but marlin M60s run around $170 or so usually. my first rifle was an older M60. it would not feed soft lead bullets, it had to have plated bullets to feed properly and it had to be cleaned at least every brick. it was more compact than the 10/22 and my buddy and I growing up used to shoot empty 22 casings at 50 yards with it but I would take a 10/22 over it anyday. you may just be better off spending the $170 on ammo for the 10/22 you already own...

... also, this is bolt gun forums... might have been better to post in the semi auto forums.

Why do you take it all the way out?

In the field, I just place the butt on the ground to load the tube. Making sure the muzzle is in a safe direction...not pointed at me.

I grew up with a 75 in my hands (basically the carbine model, essentially the same action). I loved that gun, and still have it, killed hundreds of g hogs with it. I purchased a model 60 about 10 years ago and am just as happy with it as I am the 75. I've heard great things about the 10/22's but I'd never part with my Marlins.

Not sure where the new ones stand as I've heard mixed reviews about newer marlins, but I don't have one so I can't offer any insight.

No, I mean why take it all the way out when you don't need to?

I think it's just easier to pull it all the way out, I always have. Seems its be more cumbersome pulling it partially out and tossing rounds in the cutout.. That's just me, to each their own.

Is there something exceptionally difficult about squeezing the plunger tube under your armpit while you're loading the magazine that no one told me about? That's a concern, why exactly? Even if you drop it, all that's entailed is picking it back up. How is this a detriment?

as oposed to a box magazine that you hold in your hand with no added gimick that you have to tuck into your armpit and modify you stance and movements to prevent it from slipping? I don't pull the rod all the way out any more but I used to when I was younger. either way the whole setup is much less convenient than a detachable box mag.

You could get some old aluminum arrows and make speed loaders. I don't need them. I can load a tube mag faster than I can load a 10/22 mag with loose ammo.
