Zeroing Sendero 300 win mag w/Leupold VariX 3

I just bought this beast. At what distance should I zero it? It's a 3.5 - 10 variable with adj. obj. lense. Where should I set it for zero? Thanks for any info you have.

Well, there are some folks a lot more familiar with the .300 than I, but two inches high at 100 yards oughta zero at maybe 225-250 yards.

You know all about removing the bolt and looking through the bore at a 100-yard target and then centering the crosshairs on the target? And doing your first shots at 25 yards, so you know you're on the paper? When you're exactly on at 25 yards, you'll likely be pretty close to two inches high at 100 yards. Two clicks to the inch at 100 yards means eight clicks to the inch at 25 yards.

The exact trajectory and zero-point will depend on what weight of bullet you plan to use. What do you expect to hunt?

Thanks, Art.
I'm using 190 grain. I plan on going deer hunting here in VA. I wanted .308 but I couldn't pass up on the rifle/scope price. 300 win mag may be overkill. Oh well. The scope is awesome.

Art: Pardon my ignorance, but what kind of scope gets two clicks to the inch??? I've seen a bunch of scopes, but never ran across one with two clicks to the inch at 100 yds.

Well, my Leupold Vari-X II, 3X9 is a half-minute adjustment. Most of the others are the usual 1/4-minute click. I have a Vari-X II 2X8 on another gun; guess I oughta take a look when I get back home.

I've not used a Vari-X III; I just sorta assumed... :)

laxman, take note: Your scope might be 1/4-minute clicks.

Laxman, like the other guys said get it on paper first at around 25 yards then take it to about 100 yards. I have my .300 win set up at about 2 IN. high at 100 yards.I moved on back to about 275 yards and tried some shots. It was still shooting just a little high at that distance using 180 GR. reloads. I have my other deer rifles set at about 1 to 1 1/2 IN high.I plan on using the .300 mag for some longer shots this year hunting some long fields. I have a nikon monarch 5.5 X 14.5 X 44 MM scope on mine and have discovered that I have too much scope for hunting 40 yards and closer since it only zooms down to 5.5 power. I got the gun for longer shots and hunting out West.I prefer using my 30.06 most of the time for deer have'nt had a chance to pull the trigger on the .300 yet for any game animals.I have heard that theres no problem putting them down with the .300 and yea it might be overkill in some instances. Good luck on your hunting trip.

Thanks guys. The only place around here to sight her in would be the NRA range in Fairfax. It can't be more than 75 yards. What would you do in this case. Find something longer or compensate somehow?

I'd go for 1-1/2" high at 75 yards. When you get to the field, set up a beer can at 200 yards, and check it from a decent rest--the old "blanket on the hood of a truck" trick.

You'll be close enough "as makes no never-mind".

Unless you're positive the gun hasn't been banged around a bit during travel, it's always wise to re-check when you get to camp, anyway. Always avoid embarrassemnt!

Went to the range today. It was only 151' so I compensated for it. I love this rifle! I thought the 300 would have nasty recoil but it wasn't so bad(I was cringing on my first shot). Again thanks so much for the help. Lax

When I lived in the People's Republic of Maryland I used to shoot regularly at that range (It is a hell of a facility, by far the nicest open-to-the-public range I have ever used.)

Anyway, the reason I am writing is to ask what the .300 Win Mag sounded like in the NRA range. In all my trips there I never heard anything bigger than a 30-06 being fired, and that was pretty darn "concussive" if you know what I mean. Every time anyone touched off one of those big cartridges the entire range would fall quiet for a few seconds ;-) .

It weasn't as bad as I thought it would be, but it was loud. The 308s and 06s have that crack sound. This was more like a boooom.Like a cannon. The place wasn't that crowded. The guys next to me didn't seem to mind. It's a great range.
