Zeroing an M1Garand and AR15 at a short range???

Hi friends,
Ideally, I'd like to sight in my rifles at 100yd but the range available to me only goes out to 50yd. I have 2 questions:

1) For an M1Garand, if I zero it at 50yd, how would it hit at 100yd?

2) This next question is a little more challenging. I also have a 16" flat top - Aimpoint mounted on Swan Sleeve with flip up rear sight. If I try to sight in the iron sights at this short range, it would be reasonable to expect it to hit low. How much below center is correct for it to be right on at 100yd?

Thanks.

I don't have the link handy, but the Maryland Shooters page has an article about an "Improved Combat zero" that is set for 50 yards. This will make your POI right on at 200. I am not sure how it hits at 100. Ashley outdoors used to have a sheet regarding .223 ballistics. You can try their site as well.

Try this link for a ballistic calc.

My run for the 30-06 using a 165 gr bullet at 2800 fps is:

60 2687.7 2646.4 1.97 0.2
70 2669.2 2610.2 1.96 0.3
80 2650.9 2574.4 1.94 0.3
90 2632.6 2539.1 1.93 0.3
100 2614.4 2504.1 1.92 0.3
110 2596.3 2469.5 1.90 0.2

You're gonna have to do some pencil and paper figuring...

For either cartridge, and with a scope-sighted rifle, two inches high at one hundred yards is about dead on at 200 yards, and roughly 6" low at 300 yards. This oughta give you a general idea of the trajectory.

Again, with a scope: Dead on at 25 yards is usually around 2" to 3" high at 100 yards.

For the Garand, the iron sights are about 1/2" above the centerline of the bore, rather than the 1-1/2" of a scope on a bolt-action. (Roughly)

I'd guesstimate that 1" high at 50 yards would make a good starting point, assuming that you want the usual "battle sight" setup of a "point-it-and-pull" situation out to 300 yards.

I've never messed with the Aimpoint deal.

Hope this BS helps,
