Zero Distance

Hello all! Recently purchased a stainless Ruger Mark III Hunter with the long fluted barrel. Thought I wanted to put some sort of optical sight on it and had a Bushnell Holosight that I had never put on a gun and thought why not. Threw it on and took it to the range and it seemed to work well. Base screws loosened after a 100 shots or so so I had to quit. Really was just a test so literally did just slap it on and did not loctite the screws. Liked it well enough to mount it the right way next time. Question is for you guys is what distance would you set the zero. Going to plink and hunt small game with it.

Figure the size target you need to hit and then go to the range to see how far you can hit it consistently from the position(s) you'll be shooting from in the field. Then zero for that distance and do enough shooting to get a feel for the trajectory for closer shots.
