Zastava Model 85

9x19

(also briefly imported as Remington 799)

Found one of these at a decent price this week, should have it in hand next week. This one is 7.62x39mm. About the only option other than the CZ527 for a bolt gun in this cartridge.

Anyone have any first hand experience?

My buddy bought one, shoots the cheap Wolf 123 grain ammunition less than 2” for five shots all day long. He hasn't found a hand load that'll shoot as well, but he's only tried one bullet for it. He also has one in .223 that's an absolute tack driver. I have a Charles Daly mini Mauser in .250 Savage and my only complaint with these rifles are the bolt handles, they are just too tiny for my tastes.

mini mauser

Same as scorch, I have a early mark x mini in .223 and am well pleased.

I might add that I have a bolt carbine in 7.62x39 from another manufacturer and am well pleased with the combo. But I do not shoot import bulk steel case in the bolt rifle.

I have a few hundred rounds of brass cased S&B that will be used in this one... after that, reloads.

If it's anything like the CZ 527, I think you'll really like it! Shot my 527 in 7.62x39 for the first time yesterday. Got the scope sighted in. Seems to be pretty accurate, but will know just how accurate once I have a stable rest and not a folding card table to shoot from...

Congrats on the new rifle! Too bad you won't have it in time for last weekend of deer season...

Be sure to give the barrel a thorough cleaning before you fire it. I pushed a foot and a half long cylinder of red grease out of the bore of my Mini Mauser in 223. I was really happy I'd cleaned it before I tried firing it.

The bolt handle is short, which doesn't give much leverage. This results in a heavy bolt lift. You can make it smoother but you can't make it much lighter.

Same model...different variation. So far I like it.

Older version made under a different name. Shot it a lot and like it a lot. Damn thing once shot a 1/2" group at 100 yards with milsurp ammo.

That's my custom made Zastawa M85 in ,223 rem. Does well up to 600 yards. Hunt with it on roe bucks and foxes with 55 gr. sako game head bullets.:)

Picked it up this morning and was pleased to see the checkering is actually cut, not pressed. The barrel is free floating the entire length of the stock. The bolt handle is small, but I'm not going to hunt dangerous game with it, so I can get used to it.

Mounted a Vortex 3x-9x on top and now just waiting for the weather to dry up so I can take it out back and see how it shoots.
