Z-Hat Custom Guns

I wonder if anyone knows anything about this outfit. About nine months ago I contacted Fred about rebarrelling my BRNO .375 H&H to .500 Jeffery, based on a quotation he gave me as a result of several conversations on the phone and exchange of email. I sent him the rifle and a deposit check, but have heard nothing more since then.

I realized that the job would take some time, so I haven't been concerned until recently, when emails went unacknowledged and telephone calls unanswered.

I don't suspect deceit, but I'm concerned that Fred's operation, which as far as I know is a one man show, may have come to a standstill because of some health or domestic crisis. I have to admit, I am also concerned about my money and my rifle.

Lol

He might just be swamped and handling the work and not the phone and emails. I have heard nothing but good things about the man myself and I would tell you to relax, everything should be fine. Let him have time to answer the email you sent him. If it goes to a year, then try to call him again.

Smith's that do work by themself don't have a lot of time to devote to the business end of the job, like keeping in touch with the customer. It's a shame, but that us how it is a lot of times. If you take the time to answer the phone every time it rings, you would spend all day answering the phone and not working on the jobs. Best of luck with it, but I think you will be happy when you get the call your gun is on the way.

Try the good old US Mail...

Send him a registered letter. If he accepts it, you get notified. If he refuses it, you still get notified with the returned letter. Either way, you know he's alive and kicking.

The message doesn't have to be nasty, just a polite inquiry about the status of the project.

Since a 'smith's time is so precious, you might even include in the envelope a SASE (Self Addressed Stamped Envelope) so he doesn't have to waste time chasing down the required pieces to send you a reply.

Good luck!
