Id like to use an extended mag with one of my SKS's thats a YUGO. I went to cabelas and purchased the steel ones that were supposed to work well with SKS's. It fit was so poor when I racked the gun the chamber coulden close.

DOES ANYONE HAVE ANY INFO ON WHERE I CAN GET A GOOD SKS EXTENDED MAG THAT WILL FIT A YUGO?

I dont know why no one seems to want to make a quality accessories and part for popular import mil surplus guns. Maybe its me and I just keep missing them and there out there but it dont seem that way.

thats because if it didn't originally come with the weapon it is a aftermarket product an really not ment for it i mean they come with a 10 round clip right?

Tapco makes 20 rounders that should work fine. Be advised that due to federal law you cannot just use detachable mags in imported rifles. In order to be legal you have to change out some other parts like the gas piston, muzzle brake, etc to US made parts. Otherwise if you dont you are breaking federal law. If I remember correctly in order for a Yugo to be compliant it has to have 14 or less imported parts. I could be wrong but I think a Yugo comes with 17 total imported parts. Using a regular detachable mag qualifies as two parts. That still leaves 15 imported parts. That would make the rifle in violation. Now if you also removed the grenade launcher and ordered a US made gas piston which you can buy on Ebay you would come in under the 14 or less rule. Tapco also makes a muzzle brake for the yugo. If you are using a wood stock you will also have to more than likely inlet the stock to make it work due to the tolerances. Join http://www.sksboards.com I am a member there and all this information you are asking and I am telling you is readily available there.

Nope they come with a 10 round magazine. Clips are what you use to load the stock magazine i.e. stripper clips. Further more after market mags can work. Stay away from National, Target Sports, Pro mag and the like. I have six 30 round USA brand steel magazines and six 20 round tapco polymer magazines.

Check out Survivor's SKS Boards for legal issues regarding the SKS rifle. I believe 922r says that if you change the rifle you will need to have 10 or less imported parts in it, there's a whole list of parts that you can change to make it 922r compliant, but you might be better off leaving it alone.

Yup like I stated previously you cannot just slap a detachable mag in it and call it done. Without adding at least two-three more parts on that Yugo you would definitely be breaking the law and if caught by the ATF could do a long prison sentence.

Why is this different from ars and aks?
It's not. But since they actually come with detachable magazines, someone has already insured they are compliant before they're sold. If you're the one doing the modification then you're the one responsible for making the result compliant.

Why is this different from ars and aks?

The difference is the ars and aks already come with detachable magazines. The Yugo, Russian, Albanian, and Polish SKS did not they came with 10 round fixed magazines. Most Chinese sks came with 10 round magazines also. There were chinese d and m models that took AK mags from the factory so they wouod already be compliant.

Nope. The difference is the way they came in. Yugo's were imported under C&R rules. If you make a modification to the C&R, it's no longer a C&R and you have to make it legal. When the Chinese and Russian varieties came in, they were imported in a legal configuration to begin with, not under C&R rules.

ya that is what i ment is the 10 round non-detachable box. i mean do you really need more then 10 rounds? i say if it didn't come from the factory with a bigger clip it didn't need it. i mean its military if they thought it needed it im sure it would of came with a bigger one.

I'm no fan of swapping out the stock SKS mag for detachables (in fact, I try to discourage people from modding the things- the end product is never the AK that people seem to want), but this is just silly.

It isn't about need. NOTHING is about need. If somebody wants to do it, that's enough. If you are only allowed what you needed, a life in prison will meet all your needs. But it's hardly the life anybody wants.

So long as the legality issues are met (seanc is correct- it has to do with how the guns are imported- imported under C&R regulations, the SKS is nonsporting and otherwise not legal to import or possess under US law; if you change anything on the gun, it is no longer C&R and must meet the parts count as detailed under 922r), you merely must find parts that actually work. And although I still think making an SKS into a tactical style rifle is an abomination (and not in a good way, like the Saiga 12), your best bet is going to be with the Tapco products. I hear those work pretty well. Run away (FAR away) from Promag.

Yup,

The only pro mags that I use are the polymer five rounders for hunting. They seem to work fine. They got rave reviews on midway usa.

Great info thank you.

Thanks to those of you who gave great advice. I had not considered the BULL EXCRIMENT laws out there and compliance. I forgot that we live in a sort of free country now days and we all sort of have the right to keep and bear arms.

Also, as far as why I want more than 10 rounds. I just do. I have more than a few guns. Frankly, after the first 12 gauge shot gun I don’t really need any of them. Anyway, some of my guns I tinker with, and some I don’t fool with. I have a Russian and a Yugo SKS and I want to tinker with the Yugo. Anyway, every time I’m read a gun or shooting forum someone asking about extending magazine capacity is asked "why do you need more rounds". It’s a question that is always tiresome to read.

If someone wants a Mosin to have 10 rounds not five someone says "why", ask about more than 10 in an SKS someone says "why" ask about more than 30 in an AK someone says "WHY" So, I ask this, "WHY NOT"! No police officer in a shoot out ever says "Man were pinned down and we have an excessive amount of ammo, this is bad". No soldier in a battle ever says "Praise the Lord and pass the socks, I got to much ammo as it is". No one goes into a gun store and buys a semi auto Pistol and says "Got the same thing but one that only holds 6 rounds instead of 10". No home defense expert ever suggested "Go buy a single shot shotgun their best for home defense". So, let me ask you again WHY NOT? Every bit of conventional wisdom out there recognizes that if you can have more rounds ready you’re just better off so, please, share with me the reason you feel the need to ask me WHY DO YOU WANT / NEED MORE ROUNDS? One day were going to be shooting lasers at the range. I don’t know about anyone else but I’m finding a way to hook my Laser Gun up to an alternator and a car battery system!?

I want more rounds for the same reason. Because I can!

Why not? Because the SKS is dead nuts reliable in stock form with integral 10 round mag and reliability is a crapshoot with detachable mags.

I refer you to my original post,

I have several obviously I want to tinker with one of them. The idea is the one I want to fiddle with isant my best looking sks and since its a good shooter like the others I thought it wold be a good one to make a project out of. So, I thought if I could get it into a reliable config that held more rounds it would be a cool candidate for a new plastic stock and some other neat crap. But, I do agree all my SKS's are great shooters and I feel they get a bad wrap as far as supposed accuracy problems. At 100 yards I can get in the red of the bullseye with at lease 4 of my 10 shots the rest are within the next 2 rings out. So, thats roughly a 2.5" group on the targets im useing. At 100 yards with a surplus battle gun I will take that all day long.
