Yugo sks will NOT cycle.

I went to the range and it will not cycle rounds.
At all, I cleaned the piston, no more cosmoline, everything lubricated. But not a single round out of 70 cycled.
I was shooting fiocci and wolf. What could be the problem?
And the gas shut off valve was to the right.
I tried both ways up and right and nothing.

I took the gun a part to check it out and I realized I didn't take the gas piston extension out and clean off the cosmoline.
It had a decent amount on it. Could that also be the problem?

And is there a way to test the valve without firing it?
And how do I remove the valve?

The versions of the Yugo SKS that were made with the ability to launch grenades have a gas cut-off to avoid beating the piston to death while launching grenades; there should be a sliding button on the gas block in an L-shaped groove, and that slider is set in-line with the barrel (on top) for grenade-launching, and to the right for semi-auto operation.

I tried it again and I realized when I turn it to the right it wouldn't go all the way over, then I tried to take it out and it wouldn't go all the way out so I got the punch that came with the sks and tapped it and it came out. I lubricated it and pit it back in and now it goes all the way to the right.

Had the same problem with my Yugo, it was the gas valve ! Keep moving it back and forth a few times. And it definately has to be clean . Mine works fine now, but it sure threw me for a loop. Also make sure it stays locked in position during your shooting session . It can move a bit and mess you up again. Good shooting!

Mine developed the same problem - too much gas leaking by the valve body. I removed it, cleaned it well and coated it with Permatex Blue Gasket Maker, then greased the inside of the valve housing. Installed, and the gas valve turns properly, and no problem cycling. Been running perfectly for three years now!
Worked for me.

Use your Google-Fu and you should be able to locate a guy or two who make new stainless steel gas valve bodies.
