Yugo SKS problems--HELP!

I just bought a Yugo 59/66 SKS and took it out to the range. The first 30 rounds went through no problem. The second thirty I decided to play Rambo with it and shot off about ten rounds from the hip in rapid fire, and my new gun jammed. And jammed, and jammed. I had to take it apart a few times to get the bolt to open and clear the shell. I noticed that there is a small metal pin, about 5/32 diameter, that moved out (twords the butt of the rifle) and was stopping the bolt from cycling. At first I could just slam the bolt up and make it close, but after a few more shots it became impossible. This pin sits in a round tube that runs about 3/4 inch from the top of the chamber into the base of the flip-up sights. My question is, what does this pin do and how can I keep it from jamming up the action again? Please help! :(

Go to surplus rifle.com and they have a good section on the sks.If it's what I think it is-you're describing the spring loaded valve/pin for the grenade launcher.Depending on the position,it can make it a single shot.
 
OK, since this pin is for the grenade launcher, and it is unlikely that I will use a grenade launcher, can I loctite it in the housing?
 
I just look at mine,if it is the pin at the rear sight you're probably seeing part of the op rod.If you didn't take it apart and clean the cosmoline out-I would bet that's the problem.You want believe all the grease packed in the tube from storage.go to surplus rifle.com click on the sks disassembly directions-it's easy,especially after the first time.
 
The proper name for the rod i think you're seeing is the gas piston extension.It actually sits underneath the rear sight.I think if ya clean it out good the problems will go away.Mine has turned out to be a lot more accurate than I thought it would be.also make sure the firing pin rattles in the bolt,if it sticks it can slam fire and you'll have a full auto sks.
 
I took it apart and cleaned it all out...it was pretty dirty. I couldn't get the pin out now that the barrel has cooled, though... :confused: I will test it out again tomorrow. Thanks for the helo Kart!
