Yugo SKS/Mauser 24/47 accuracy after counter bored

So I went ahead and counter bored, both my Yugo SKS, and Mauser with a drill press. The Yugo SKS seems like a better more centered counter bore it shoot very accurately at approximately 90-100 yards I managed to get 5 shoots into what I want to say was roughly 1 1/2 inches or 2 which is obviously great. It was within the bulls eye and the first ring, I have never seen it shoot that accurately in the 6 years or so I have had it. My Mauser is less accurate maybe 4 inch groups at a 100 yards. However, at 50 yards I can get the holes to touch, and no more fliers flying off circles, so it seems slightly improved, but not by much, its never really seemed that accurate. Yet I hear all these stories about 2 inch groups or even 1 inch groups at 100 yards. I am using a rest perhaps when I cock the piece, and I lose sight picture, I miss align the piece. Is this a common problem with bolt actions(or in shooters?) Do iron sights usually yield less than stellar groupings on a bolt gun? That or the rifle is inaccurate, though that seems unlikely since it seems reasonable at 50 yards I don't think the bullet just suddenly spirals out of control past 50 yards... Anyways I am just curious I don't plan on ever scoping or dumping any more money into it. I tried sporterizing it with a Boyds stock, but it literally blew it to pieces, and created huge cracks. Perhaps, installed it wrong or maybe it was because it was for an m-48! Will be getting K98 soon looking forward to removing the shellac lI think milsurpitus has finally caught up with me LOL happy holidays!

No cast iron rule, each rifle has its own personality & each shooter ditto.

My unaltered Yugomauser 24/47 has outshot my scoped Weatherby Vanguard at 100 yards, and the Weatherby can hold fairly steady at 1.5 inches in .308.

I've gotten 2 inches at 100 yards from a minty .303 Enfield with standard sights. Could probably do at least slightly better if I worked up a handload for it.

If I recall correctly, best 5-shot group I got when I was playing with a Ruger No 1 single-shot in .45-70 with iron sights and handloads was 7/8 inches at 100 yards.

This past June I got a best 3-shot group of 1 1/4 inches through an Italian Sharps falling block replica in .45-70 at 100 yards, using the factory iron sights.

In July I got a best 3-shot group of 1 3/8 inches at 100 yards with factory sights on a new Ruger .308 boltgun.

Sight type & your eyes are important factors.

Hmmm...

If your Mauser destroyed a stock, something was wrong there, stock-wise.

As far as accuracy, you just have to see what bullet the rifle likes. Try some different combinations.
