Yugo sks gas issues

Hello all, this is my first post here, and well, I have a bit of an interesting issue I have not been able to resolve with all the research I've done. I bought a Yugo SKS a couple months ago that has cycling issues, and I've narrowed it down to very likely a gas issue. Sometimes it has failures to extract, sometimes it stovepipes, and every so often i get all 10 rounds off with no issue. I've made no modifications, all parts match and the only thing I've tried replacing is the gas valve, which didn't really help.

Anyone have any ideas on what could be the issue? Recoil spring is correctly placed, gas valve was replaced with new one...I want this rifle to work and I'm at a loss for what to do now. Thank you for your time
 
"...failures to extract, sometimes it stovepipes..." That's not necessarily an ammo issue. Failures to extract an be the extractor itself. Stove piping can be a feeding issue or the extractor or its spring.
Start by giving the bolt a really good bath and look closely at the extractor and its spring.
A new extractor and spring runs about $30. These guys are not the only source. Gunparts is sold out though.

However, is "tried different types" different brands, preferably not steel cased? Not entirely convinced ammo is you issue though. More likely the extractor.
 
The Yugo 59/66 version of the SKS does in fact have a gas valve.

Did you replace it with the Murray's aftermarket (slightly oversize) one or an original? Just curious, mine has been fine but I bought an aftermarket one to have as a spare.
 
All cleaned, cosmoline was taken off first day. Dang thing was absolutely caked in it. Bore clean, all seems like it should work. I ordered a new, steel gas valve and that gave marginally better performance. I cleaned the bolt, made sure the firing pin was clean and free flowing, I've been absolutely stumped as to what the issue could be. I'm wondering if extractor could be it. When it jams i have to press very hard on the bolt to get it open, sometimes i have to use something like a piece of wood as leverage to get it open. Other times it just stovepipes. And every so often (as in maybe 40-50% of the time), it will go fine with no issues. I'll look into the extractor though, and I'll try re-cleaning the bolt
 
Hm I thought I had cleaned it well enough but now I'm going to take the time to give another one, maybe that could help a bit.
 
I had a customer bring in an SKS a few years ago doing the same things.

His was missing the Piston Return Spring. He didn't even know it was gone.
I ordered one, put it in the rifle and it worked perfectly.

See that you have that spring!
 
Your description of have to fight to get the bolt open says dirty chamber to me. Get that cleaned out well first and foremost.
