Yugo 8mm ammo

Bought 45 rounds of Yugo surplus 8mm ammo at gun shop yesterday.
Did some checking on internet and found this does not have stellar reviews; there were 3 or 4 people who warned against even firing ammo that was marked 1955 factory 11(the ammo I purchased). I went ahead and shot it anyway; first four went fine, fifth split case about half way up. Anyone have any experience with this particular ammo. Rifle is 1935 K98

I have fired many rounds of it. Cases are brittle and the primers are very hard. I have never had a problem with it in any of my 8 Mausers. I did have to replace the firing pin spring in my Turks to get it to fire reliability.

My experience with it was the same. Some rifles I have that must have weaker springs took two strikes to set the rounds off and I had a few case splits but nothing serious.
 
I agree with the tidewater kid, the primers on yugo ammo extremely hard.
I have to replace the spring on 24/47, since I get a lot of "clicks" with the yuog ammo.
 
I have had the same problem with the yugo ammo in the mid 50s
cases split, most just a little but some all the way down to the base

scared the $#!* out of the wife when two failed on her, one
covered her face with soot, when she took off her safety glases she looked like some kind of strange racoon and refuses to use that
" trash ammo " in her Mauser ( M48 Sniper )

I won't use it either
I still have almost 2 cases of it stacked in the corner
 
I concur. As long as the rifle's headspace is OK....and the ammo shows no obvious signs of problems (corrosion, split necks, etc.)....then you should be fine with it.

Heck, I used to pull the bullets on the 50's Yugo ammo.....and keep the bullets and powder for hand loads. The powder is not bad, pretty consistent....but a little on the fast side. The bullets are nice for range use - 198 grain boat-tail FMJ's - and can be used for very accurate loads.
 
I shot a bunch of it back when I was in my 8mm phase. I had to re-strike more than a couple with my K98 to fire some. Same with my Hakim.
Some of them split at the neck, but all ejected.

You should be fine. If you're using a bolt, then maybe buy a stronger striker spring.
 
I have been blasting away quite a bit of the Yugo surp ammo and from different lots. Never had any problems. I have fired plenty thru my Hakim and matching the Yugo ammo with a 24-47, I get exceptional groups.
