Youth stock.....?

This will sound dumb but I have a 500C ( 20ga ) with a synthetic stock, standard length.

What I need is to replace that with a YOUTH size stock. So I've looked around and don't see such, even though I know Mossberg sells a pile of the in YOUTH configuration.

So is it that what they are calling a BANTAM stock is the youth stock or is that for the .410 only....?

Suggestions as to where to get one? Even used?

Unfortunately Mossberg does not take off much LOP with it's 500 Youth stock 13 7/8". My wife is 5' and a lop of 12 1/2" is about right for her but I (5' 10")can not go much below 13" to feel right, so I am cutting down the youth stock to 12 3/4 so we can both be unhappy.

By comparison the Hogue replacement stock for the 12 gauge is a 12" lop. Many people - men, women and youths are using it and it is rated highly. Don't think they make them for the 20ga.

Don't think the bantam stock will fit the reg 500's. I think it's just for the 505.

Best bet may be to cut your stock down and and put a limbsaver on it. A good gunsmith could cut the syn down for you, maybe cheaper than a replacement stock.

If you have a wood stock, but not the proper jig, you can cut down a stock and completely change every measurement - for the worse. It needs to be done carefully.

As to LOP - it is easier to shoot a shorter stock than one that is too long

I looked up how to measure LOP and checked hers against the stock. As someone said the shotgun measures almost 14inches, 13 7/8 exactly. When I measured her arm, and this was without any clothing in the way, it was right at 13 inches. That does seem to be a problem.

Used Mossberg 500 stocks are always available on Ebay. Why not just buy a cheap used one and chop it. If you screw it up, it won't have cost you a lot.

A shorter stock also makes it easier to reach the front forearm in addition to the trigger. Cutting it off is the best ans. As 1ounce said be sure to keep all the angles on the butt when cutting it off. The shorter you go (within reason)I'll bet the better it will fit her. Cut it to 12" with a 1" pad would get 13". Have her try the fit without the pad at 12". I'll bet she will have you cutting off another 1/2 inch or inch.

Did as suggested this afternoon, cut it off. It now has just under a 13 inch pull. Sad thing is, besides the fact that I am a butcher with tools, is that when I went to trim the recoil pad to fit the now smaller stock I found out that the pad has a steel plate in it. And as you'd expect the plate was just a little wider at the heal than the size of the stock.

It looks kind of crappy...............should work though. Besides that it was a $200 shotgun so how much damage could I have really done..!

Now a Limbsaver grind to fit will complete the job. They are easy to grind down if you have done about 10 of them, freeze it first. Plus you may have to put wood plugs in the syn stock to screw into. Syn stocks suck except for foul weather.

How does the Gun fit the wife now at 13". I had to go down to 12-1/2 before my wife started to feel comfortable.

Measure the space from her thumb to nose while aiming the gun in her shooting stance. Thumb wrapped over the stock. Around 1-1/4 to 1-1/2 inches is what I have been told by a couple of people is right. I have no idea if that is correct, but 1-1/2" has always matched what I feel comfortable with. My wifes is about 2 inches with 12 1/2" LOP, she now wants another 1/2" off the stock, so we'll be cutting and grinding too.

With my nose this close to thumb I both have been shooting for some time now with the thumb along side of the safety instead of wrapping it over the top.

Way to go on the cut down. No other way to go except to dive in with both feet.

She says it now fits good. We'll find out in the morning. Going in early then taking a couple of hours as soon as the range opens up to toss some clays.

I tried havlin............ very good prices but no youth stocks at this time....

The inside of the synthetic stock does not offer much option for changing screw placement. I actually thought, now that the stock is the right length, that I could remove the pad and get a slip on without changing the new LOP. But them she says a little ugly doesn't bother her, which I know is true because she married me, so maybe I'll just leave it like it is......
