Youth Shotguns

With Turkey season in the air, I am upgrading my 8 year old daughter to a pump shotgun. In the past, she has done well with the H&R .20 ga. single shot, but is now ready to advance. I am eyeing the Remington 870 youth .20 ga, but have no experience with these. I did see one thread that indicated that they had a terrible recoil. That freightens me a bit as I don't want to shy her away. So I am wondering if anyone has suggestions, or maybe can testify as to what other youths are using and how they like them. Thanks.
 
I would think that the remington 870 wouldn't be much different than a single shot, Probally better due to more weight.

If your daughter can handle a H&R single shot, she should have no problem with a 870. If you reload, why not make up some lighter loads for here.
 
I think the youth model only comes in 20 gauge. The light target 12 gauge loads are pretty easy to handle even for a kid. My little brother is 9 and can handle my Mossberg very well with light loads. If your daughter can handle a single shot 20 gauge, then I think she could handle a pump 12 gauge. I think single shots tends to kick more due to less weight and parts than a pump shotgun. If you go with a 12 gauge then make sure to only use light loads at first.
 
Thanks guys. I am apprciating your feedback. Hey, I just see that Remington made a 870 Express syntetic youth in a 16 ga. I don't know if they are still available, but is this a good compromise between the 12 and 20??
 
I have two boys, one 11 and one 12 years old. One is a thick little hearty guy (about 120 lbs.) and the other is tall and skinny (105 lbs.). Both guys love to hunt and shoot. I bought a Remington Express Camo Synthetic in 20 gauge for the 12 year old and a Mossberg Camo 500 combo 20 gauge(Standard barrel and fully rifled slug barrel) for the skinny one. Both guns function flawlessly with the exception of loading 3" shells which takes a little wiggling of the shell to get it in the magazine. The only complaint about recoil came from my thin guy when he was shooting slugs. The bigger guy feels that he has graduated to a 12 gauge and shoots my Remington 870 SPS and my Benelli SBEII with 3" Magnums with no problems. He has worked and saved some money, combined that with Christmas money that he has been holding on to, and we're going to pick up a Mossberg 835 tactical turkey gun (adjustable stock) this week. He can't handle the 3 1/2" loads just yet but this gun gives you a lot of options and room to grow. The only disadvantage is the weight. The 835 is a little to heavy for him to hold for extended periods of time but he will grow into it. There are Remington 12 gauge youth guns but I don't have any experience with them.
