Ever hear of the U.S. budget surplus? Here is an idea I had for Indiana which also has a surplus or the U.S. which would be an interesting proposal.

Proposal: Purchases of gun safety related items such as safety locks and gun safes would be tax credit on your taxes.

The credit would have to be added after the tax bracket was figured so that those who do not itemize would get an increase in their return or lowering of their tax bill owed. This would encourage lower income individuals to purchase such items that they may not otherwise consider due to cost.

This legislatin would encourage the purchase and use of items that would secure guns such as locks or safes. A receipt of the purchase would be the only requirement and "not" an inspection of the home.

Probably never pass by the demo's but it could be used by the republicans for ammo.

I hate goverment involvement but what do you think of this idea?

I think a problem would arise from the camp seeking to require safes, gun locks, trigger locks, etc. From their point of view, why give a tax break on something required? The truely die hard antis will absolutely not reward gun owners through a tax incentive. They will kill any such measure, in my opinion.

Such legislation has been proposed in the current session of the Iowa Legislature; it would provide a $500 state income tax credit for purchase of a gun safe costing $1000 or more.

I would support such legislation, however I agree with Erik.

Part of the anti agenda is to increase the fiscal cost of gun ownership as a deterrent. Banning inexpensive guns, requiring locks and safes all suffice to drive up the cost. They wouldn't want that part of the agenda to be hamstrung.

That's the point guys. They wouldn't go for it because it would ruin their agenda. Thus we could use their nonsupport against them. in the political arena.

I for one would say I would rather get a tax break than a credit and let me decide if I want to buy the locks, etc.. This would be legislation through tax incintives which I believe would go against Republican values but it would work to their benefit because the anti's would vote it down. $500-$1,000 tax credit means more money for guns!

As for being mandatory, it isn't yet so this could be offered as an alternative to mandatory legislation.

Any further comments?

First, the "surplus" is only hypothetical. How can you have a surplus when you are trillions of dollars in debt? The way that His Klintoness has lied about budgets in the past, I doubt the projected "surplus" will actually materialize.

Second, such tax incentives are not mentioned in the Constitution. Those of us who are for peronal liberties shouldn't promote unconstitutional actions on the part of the government no matter how good those actions look.

The surplus may not exist but It will definately be spent if my money is left in Washington.

As for tax incentives being mentioned in the constitution. Neither is social security and a slew of other programs and departments.

This was just an idea that came to me. It would never pass but I thought It would be an interesting debate. :D
