Name some favorite handguns real or popularized handguns that are used for clandestine work. Ive always been intrigued by JB movies and would not mind someday to own a nice ppk. Would really like to hear some background into these, eg Detonics MKVII, SW 39-2 ASP, Russian PSM.

I know there are some debates in regards to whether these are really contracted for CIA/KGB work or such, but this is not the point. This threads purpose is to expose some of the COOL handguns whether they have REAL contracts or POPULARIZED/FICTITIOUS contracts.

(plus we all know that the most dangerous weapon the CIA has is the clipboard)

I have to laugh when I see the ASP mentioned. I must have missed the boat with this one... I never saw the draw to it, just makes me chuckle a bit. (feel free to extol the virtues of this for those of us who don't get what made them so cool)

How about the High Standard pistols that were supposedly government issue and also used a suppressor?

Don't forget the FP-45 Liberator.

That wiki page also mentions the "Deer Gun" as a successor to the Liberator, but I know nothing about that one.

The CZ Skorpion in .32 Auto is a handgun, this would have to fit your criteria, I'd think.

The first two pistols that come to mind are James Bond's .25 caliber Beretta and his Walther PPK. I've never owned a Beretta but I've had a 380 caliber PPKS for years, it's a great little back pocket pistol.

The ASP 9mm was probably the first gun to get custom gunsmiths AND the manufacturers to really offer seriously cut down guns for concealment and derfense. Seventrees took it to the limit, trimming the S&W 39 down all over. I never liked the sight; probably the only weak point of the ASP's design. Otherwise, you can now choose from S&W's 3913/14, and CS9, and get most of the attributes of the ASP. Other micro nines didn't come on the scene until 20 years later. THAT was the attraction. Thank the ASP for all the sub compact autos we have now. It was made famous by the Gardner "Bond" books that followed in the path of Ian Fleming's Bond.

The Sedgley OSS glove gun! Featured in Inglorious Bastards, can also be seen at the spy museum in DC if you're ever out that way.

Ed Lovett. A real life CIA spook, Lovett's definitive book "The Snubby Revolver" should be read and reread cover-to-cover by anyone considering carrying a handgun.

The first time I watched Driven To Kill I fell in love with the S&W 61 Escort, until I read some reviews. I still love the idea of a pocket pistol small enough to hide in a wad of $100 bills.

I will hone my guttersight techniques :D

The first gen p99 9mm is another james bond gun. Actually surprised to see it listed in the wts section

Favorite #1 - S&W Hush-Puppy

smith_and_wesson_mk22_mod0_01.jpg

The S&W Mk-22 Mod 0 Hush Puppy was devised for SF teams in Vietnam to silence guard dogs when on recon or S&D missions. It consisted of a S&W Model 39 modified with a slide-locking mechanism to prevent ejection of the empty round. A heavy sub-sonic load was used with the suppressor to minimize signature. Protective "ears" were added for the adjustable sights - a feature later made "standard" on the 439 model. Suppressor was highly effective. Operatives said the only sound was the hammer striking the firing pin for the first 8 rounds, then it started to get a little louder. After about 20 rounds, the suppressors sounded like a .22LR and were sent for rebuilding.

Favorite #2 - MBA Gyrojet Rocket Pistol

Designed from aluminum stampings, this gun was nothing more than a hand-held rocket launcher. It fired a 13mm solid slug filled with a rocket propellant, actuated by a primer on the base. Four angled exhaust ports imparted spin to the projectile and the smoothbore barrel allowed aiming (after a fashion). Quite fun to shoot, but not effective. At close range the round was barely moving 600 fps. It actually accelerated outside the barrel. But by the time it's fuel was exhausted, the projectile weight dropped and it was no more effective at 100 yards than a .357 Magnum. Accuracy was also less than stellar.

Favorite #3 - High Standard Model 10

hs-model10-2.jpg

While it's not a handgun per se, it's a semi-auto 12-gauge bullpup that can be fired one handed. Used one of these in the 70's and liked it a lot. If HS had kept the model and refined it, it would have been a top-notch patrol shotgun.
As it was, the Secret Service bought over 500 of 'em with an eye towards VIP protection. One author writing about a CIA agent in South America armed him with a Colt .38 Super and the Model 10 shotgun with a shoulder sling for carrying under a rain parka. In one scene in the novel, he's faced with four agents of Castro coming after him. In an alley, they hide behind their 67 Chevrolet and he use three "steel cored" shotgun slugs to slice & dice the Chevy and the agents. The front sight is shown folded down. The shoulder piece rotates 360 to allow it to recoil against the upper arm just above the elbow when held one-handed. 4+1 Capacity. Mountable 2-D Cell aluminum flashlight (forward of carry handle) optional. All controls ambidextrous and right-hand ejection.

I've known a number of "spooks", but the only one that ever had occation to carry a gun, outside of a war zone, carried a snub-nose .38. I've been told the tiny Walther TPH was popular in European circles. There's the rumor that a un-named "Agency" wanted to buy large numbers of the Seecamp.

Matt Helm liked the Woodsman .22, "quiet and accurate" and was irked to have to replace it with a .38 just because that was what cops (in the 1960s) carried.

Francis Gary Powers had a High Standard .22 on board his U-22; as did a number of other real US agents.

At the Atlanta gun store I hung out at in my college years, I saw a case of Walther .32 PPKs, said to be awaiting installation of PP barrels that could be threaded for Sionics suppressors on government contract. Real James Bond stuff in the flesh. Uh, steel.

Wow guys great info!! The 38 spcl i heard are sw snub nose chiefs specials. Hmmm gotta check out the hs 10 bullpup haha lightyears ahead of the ksg!

There was, for real, a Ruger Mk1 with dedicated supressed barrel.

I thought that it was the Mk1, not the High Std, that was part of Powers' crash kit.
