your choice... .308, bolt action, heavy barrel, wood stock ???

I've got a spot for one more bolt action rifle... I have an M1-A .308, but thinking I could use a .308 bolt action... this will be used primarily for informal target use, I think I'd prefer a heavier barrel, & wood stock ( laminated would be fine )

not looking to spend any more than I have to ( since the price of good mounts & glass adds up pretty fast )... I thought a vintage Remmy 700 BDL would be nice, however I expect they are rare to find in good used, so thinking Savage, Ruger, Winchester, or Remington, new... or ???

... As I look around... I kinda like the medium weight Ruger Gunsite, except for a couple things... the scout scope concept is lost on me, if the rifle is not set up to run stripper clips... I'm assuming the receiver is still drilled & tapped for a regular scope mount... also seems like there is not a lot of info on the Ruger site... is the magazine proprietary to Ruger, or is it an M1 mag ??? & are there shorter mags ??? my casual shooting is most often off sandbags, & I prefer as close to flush fitting as possible...

Mossburg's MVP Patrol ( a similar rifle ) I think only comes with composite ??? but I did find a couple older 800 A's that look pretty nice... any idea how these shot, in general, by comparison to some of the newer rifles ???

I have a tendency to prefer vintage iron to some of the modern offerings

I would say Remington 700 VLS if you were looking for something a little nicer. I would recommend the Howa Classic Laminate Varminter if you were looking to go a little cheaper. I have never owned a Howa, but I have shot one in 223 and it was nice and accurate. They consistently get good reviews, too.

Looking around Howa's website, I just found this, the Hogue Zeiss Package. Looks pretty nice and is a little cheaper than the Remington, depending on which configuration you go with.

thanks for the reply's... it'll be a little while ( spring or early summer ) before I'd be able to "pull the trigger" on the .308... so that gives me a little while to look...

I'm currently funding a pair of good scopes for my JOC model 70, & a 100th anniversary of the 30-06 Remmy 700, so unless I do better than normal at selling at the next gun show, it may be tax return time, before I can find funds for a bolt .308

I have been looking at several older Mossberg 800 A's on Gun Broker, & I like the looks of them, may be a good cheap starting point, even if I did need to re-barrel with a fresh barrel

IDF K98. Not a heavy barrel, but .308 with a wood stock. ;)

EMCON... I do like that, but it would be fighting for the last space on my Milsurp rack, & right now an 03 / 03-A3 would be getting the 1st crack at that spot ;)

Ohhh... you had to go & complicate things didn't ya... FIL was a CZ collector, & we have his collection, as well as mine ( I continued to build on his CZ collection )... I'd have to put one of those in the CZ section... & I don't have any room... otherwise that carbine would be tops of the list... I've been wanting a 7.62 X 39 Carbine, as well, but the rack is full...

maybe I should part with an odd ball I bought several years ago, a CZ straight pull bolt in 22... I have to admit, it's finicky, & doesn't seem to be of the quality you usually get with CZ... if I let that one go, perhaps I could replace it with a X39 Carbine ??? BTW... still have an old school CZ 22 bolt action, with engraved mounts, rings, & scope, that was the FIL's, so I wouldn't miss the odd ball straight pull bolt 22 :) anyway... I don't think the CZ .308 would be a reality for me... anyway... though I think it would make an awesome rifle for someone else

The best choice, IMO, would be a Sako 85 Varmint Stainless in 308! It only cost alittle more to go 1rst class!

found a nice Weatherby Vangaurd wood stocked rifle in .308 that looks pretty nice, & is reasonably priced

Sako's are nice... but I can't do $1,800 ( retail ) for the rifle

If I were you, I'd think it was the perfect opportunity to build my own Savage Target Action rifle.

The action runs $550, barrel will run you $3-400, stock of your choice (EABCo has one nearly identical to Boyd's except with pillars for $169).

You're in it about $1,200, plus optics.

That Sako is nice but I'd rather buy the Kimber 84M Longmaster Classic for $1200 plus optics.

Personally though, if I had a machinist buddy like you have I'd just rebarrel a M700 into what I wanted.
