Woman Has Gun Surgically Removed

BOGOTA (Reuters) - A Colombian woman who smuggled a handgun into a Bogota
prison hid it so well that it had to be surgically removed, local media reported on Saturday.
The leading daily, El Tiempo, said 43-year-old Tirisa Ruiz reputedly stuck the pistol deep
inside her rectum, to pass security checks at Bogota's Picota prison and turn it over to a
loved one on a visiting day last Sunday.
But the weapon got caught in her colon and she had to undergo surgery at the city's El
Tunal hospital to have it removed, El Tiempo said.
Reports of women using their private parts to smuggle drugs, guns and even hand grenades
into Colombia's notoriously violent prisons are not uncommon.
