MANHATTAN BEACH, Calif. (AP) -- A high school homecoming king renounced his crown, prompting school administrators to issue a two-day suspension against him.
Patrick Griffiths, 17, walked off the field during homecoming ceremonies for Mira Costa High School in Manhattan Beach, about 15 miles southwest of Los Angeles, on Friday night. He placed the crown on the ground as he made his exit.

The senior, who sported a foot-high Mohawk for the homecoming game, said the ceremony has historically fostered disunity.

"It discourages difference," Griffiths told the Daily Breeze or Torrance. "I was trying to show respect for every student who's been alienated."

When Griffiths went to school the following day to help with the homecoming dance, he was sent home by school officials.

Mira Costa Principal Lynn McCormack wrote a letter saying Griffiths "disrupted school activities or otherwise willfully defied the valid authority of supervisors, teachers, administrators, other school officials or other school personnel in the performance of their duties."

Griffiths was allowed to return to school Wednesday after serving the two-day suspension. He has also been removed as a student leader. A replacement king hasn't been named.
Right ON!!!

There's hope yet. The state's Thought Control system is apparently letting a few slip though the cracks!

BWAH HA HA HA!

Thats a riot.

If this is our public schools...
We are so screwed.
Guys - the plane is going down! Pass around those little bottles!

He was removed as a student leader.

Yep, you wouldn't want anyone as a 'leader' actually expressing his views, would you ? Especially, gasp ! non-conformist views !

With a foot-high Mohawk, I'm guessing this was a student vote, not an administration appointment. (hey, I went to all-boys high school, gimme a break). Why don't they just abandon all pretense and appoint their own flunky as King ?

Heh.

I can remember a speech from the high school counselor when I graduated in 1996 about how we would all conform to "the rules" and be good boys and girls and do nothing that would embarass ourselves, teachers, parents or our school.

Yeah, right.

Okay.. so we didn't pull a stunt like Patch Adam's.. but what were they gonna do? Keep us from graduating? Why not, I didn't want to goto college anyway! :D

I went to a small high school...only 109 students in the class of 1999. (What, no robot teachers??) I didn't fit in, either, but I made the most of it. As you can imagine, such a small school was clique-ified to the extreme. So, during my senior year, I managed to convince half my fellow classmates that I was writing a scientific study on them, similar to Jane whats-her-name and the Apes. I even toted this little blue notebook for awhile, and pretended to write stuff down about people. LOL...

quote:
dean, can you provide us with some follow-up on this story?
I found it at Drudge. Don't know anything more about it than what I posted.
