Robbers see spots and flee empty-handed
May 25 2000 at 06:15PM

Three armed robbers fled empty-handed from
the home of a Johannesburg taxidermist on
Thursday morning when they apparently mistook two stuffed leopards for the real thing, Johannesburg police said.

The gang overpowered gardener Thembelani Tshuma, 26, in the garden of the Fourth
Street, Linden, house and forced him inside where they assaulted him and taxidermist,
David Alison, 65.

Tshuma was stabbed once in the face, and
Alison was stabbed in the upper body and
pistol-whipped while being dragged through
the house, police spokeswoman Inspector Mary Martins-Engelbrecht said.

In one of the rooms, the attackers saw two
stuffed leopards which they must have thought
were alive and they ran away without taking
anything, she said.

Police confiscated a 9mm handgun with the
serial number filed off and a butcher's
knife.

Linden detectives are investigating.

Tshuma and Alison were both admitted to a
clinic. - Sapa

Note that this was a home invasion in broad daylight and they had no fear of attacking an occupant. It does not speak well for the new South Africa, despite the stuffed leopards.
