You did what?

I was sitting in the office this morning and one of the comm troops comes in to do some work on a phone line. Knowing I'm into guns, he strikes up a conversation. All was proceeding well until this discourse:

Him: "I own an Argentine Mauser, but it's awfully hard to find ammo for."
Me: "Really? Have you looked online?"
Him: "Yeah, but it's $35 a box. I found that I can shoot it for a lot less just using 30-30!"
Me: "You do what?"
Him: "Yeah, 30-30 works just fine in my Mauser!"

I quickly looked online. Found some 7.65x53R FMJ for $15 a box and showed him the site. I asked him to NOT try 30-30 again and just get the right ammo.

Wow... Anyone else had that kind of experience?

Wow... just wow.

I suppose in theory (and in his case practice) it could work but man that's not an ideal situation. So many things could go wrong!

Nope I've never had anything like THAT... just one idiot at the range trying to load .380acp into a 9x19 pistol and wondering why the gun jammed every time.

a rimmed brass cartridge will fireform to fit the chamber and shoot through the barrel if the fit and shape are close enough, just like fireforming .22 hornet into k hornet or .303 into 303 epps or such other situations.

Not knowing the exacts, and given your report that this guy doesn't seem to have put a lot of thought into it, I can only say that it sounds like he made a really stupid decision.

Maybe it's perfectly acceptable to do so, but it sounds like he did this with no real information or thought, and that is why I say it was a STUPID IDEA.

This seems like an obvious no no.
On the other hand, there are less severe instances of the .308/7.62 nato mix up. I don't even know for sure, but don't think these round are exactly the same, but are close enough to generally not cause problems.
Its just annoying because when you buy them, they are often classified as the same thing...
For example when it's listed as .308/7.62

Brian, there was obviously ZERO thought put into his decision. He had no idea.

Even though I don't reload (yet), I've purchased/read enough reloading manuals to understand fire forming, but dimensionally, I'm not certain these were close enough to try without having a case head separation or failure.

I certainly hope that person does not marry and have children.

It would be interesting to see him actually try to do what he said he does. 30-30 rim diameter is larger than the bolt face recess on an Argentine Mauser, and would therefore not feed through the magazine/under the extractor/into the chamber, nor should the firing pin reach the primer. If he were to manually feed it into the chamber, closing the bolt on an unaltered 30-30 round would be literally impossible, as the rim would keep the bolt from going into battery. But I have seen people try very hard to do things wrong, so I will not say he does not fire 30-30 in his 7.65X53 Argentine Mauser, I will just say it would be extremely difficult to do.

If you work with guns long enough, someone will tell you that they do something like this that will blow your mind. Fire 22LR out of a 22 WMR because it is cheaper, fire 45 ACP in 45 Colt revolvers, you name it.

One time had a coworker tell me he shot a 2 or 3" group (cant remember exactly) at 1800 yards with his .308. He also told me that he wants to build another one. He said he wants the .308 over the .300wsm because the .300wsm dropped so much, even at only 200 yard.

Yeah... about that.
