The following is a copy of an e-mail that I sent to Simon's corporate headquarters in response to a rule in all of their shopping malls banning the carrying of any weapons on their property. You might consider letting them know how you feel about their policy too:
My wife and I picked up a copy of your magazine while eating lunch at a restaurant just outside of the Richmond Square Mall in Richmond, Indiana. I noticed a section called Security Corner in which you list the rules and regulations for this mall and I assume all of the shopping malls under your company.
I was glad to see that you will not put up with a lot of what goes on in shopping malls, and was agreeing with your policy until I read the one that stated..."No carrying weapons of any kind". I want you to know that as a former Vietnam veteran, former police officer and current law enforcement instructor not to mention a lawful citizen who is licensed to carry a concealed weapon - that I am offended by this policy and not a little bit disturbed by your assumption that this will somehow make your establishments "safer". I have worked in law enforcement and as a security specialist for over 20 years and this type of mindset is not only foolish but downright negligent.
You obviously expect me to leave my weapon in my car - making it more likely to be stolen - and walk through your malls with my family and feel "safe and secure" while anyone with criminal intent is certainly going to disregard your policy. In fact, I doubt whether that type of individual would ever take the time to read your magazine or read a posted sign to that effect. This individual then will enter your mall feeling confident that he or she is going to have the upper hand and that no one will be able to stop him or her from whatever evil they intend to do.
If all your concerned about is lowering your insurance premiums by making such a ridiculous policy decision, then I do not intend to patronize your malls at anytime in the future until you rescind this policy.
You also can be assured that I will encourage all of my friends, family, and associates to do the same.
There may come a time when you will regret deeply making this policy if one of your patrons is robbed, or killed in one of your malls and a person who normally is armed but left their weapon in the car to comply with your policy could have saved a life or prevented such an incident.... it happens more often than you think.
I will welcome your reply...[/quote]And the following reply was received: <BLOCKQUOTE><font size="1" face="Verdana, Arial">quote:</font><HR>Gentlemen,
I want to sincerely thank you for bringing this concern to our attention. The number one security policy at all of our properties is that our centers will operate under and comply with all Federal, State, and local statutes and ordinances. It appears that an incorrect version of our Code of Conduct has been published at Richmond Square.
I want you to know that, upon becoming aware of this oversight through your contact with our website, we have instructed our mall staff to immediately remove all copies of "S Magazine" from distribution points at our Richmond, Indiana location. We are currently working on a plan to revise or edit the section of the magazine that included the incorrect language. To insure nationwide compliance, a directive is being issued to all of our properties that includes our Corporately-approved Code Of Conduct. I should mention that the approved version makes no reference to weapons.
In the event that you have shared your concerns with others having similar interests, you should feel free to copy them on my response and apology. We apologize for causing you concern, we appreciate your visits to our centers and hope that you will continue to include us in your shopping and entertainment plans.
Should you have additional concerns or comments please feel free to contact me directly.
Sincerely,
Thomas W. Cernock
